Duke University senior Meaghan Li combined her major in public policy with her minor in graphic design to complete these modern, sleek drug PSA posters as a class project. The class, Alcohol: Brain, Individual and Society, is taught by Dr. Amir Rezvani and the students are asked to create something artistic related to any aspect of addiction.

Greetings from the Big Easy! The summers are an exciting time for Duke students. From internships to international and domestic travel, research and summer classes, students are exploring their interests and pursuing their passions in a wide-variety of ways.
I am currently in New Orleans living with a group of 11 other Robertson Scholars from Duke and UNC, each of who have a different internship in the city. I am spending the summer teaching 6th grade English at Breakthrough New Orleans (BTNOLA), a nationally recognized program that prepares high potential middle school students, with limited resources, for rigorous academic experiences in high schools and colleges. Through this unique students teaching students model, I have had the opportunity to serve and grow as a mentor, teacher, and friend to middle school students in the area.

It has been an incredibly eye-opening experience so far and it has given the opportunity to apply the skills I have developed throughout my first year at Duke to working with and teaching kids-something that I am incredibly passionate about but don’t necessarily get to do the during the school year.
A snapshot of my experience in NOLA would not be complete without a mention of the experiences exploring this city’s rich culture with my housemates and of course trying all the delicious food! (Jambalaya and pralines anyone??)

Meet Duke's New Student Blogger: Sofia Stafford
Hi prospective Blue Devils! My name is Sofia Stafford and I am excited to provide you with a glimpse into the life of a Duke freshman. As an early decision applicant, I was drawn to Duke for the incredibly diverse student body, commitment to global engagement, and focus on interdisciplinary studies. In the short time I have been here, I can say that Duke has that to offer and much more!
This is a place of limitless possibilities that will undoubtedly fill my next four years with incredible experiences and opportunities. As a native New Yorker, Durham has been a big but welcome contrast to the skyscrapers and bustling streets of the city. It was hard to say goodbye, but I have already found myself calling Duke “home.”

To tell you a little about myself… I am an avid blogger, passionate feminist, flamenco and hip-hop dancer, and cupcake lover. In high school, I was very involved in community service and social justice issues especially surrounding girls and women, and I have been excited to find an array of opportunities that will allow me to further explore those passions here at Duke.
Although I plan on taking a range of classes, I am looking to combine my interests in global health, international issues, and journalism both in my academic and extracurricular pursuits. Duke’s new global health major and the Latin American studies certificate are especially intriguing!
Coming from a graduating high school class of 27 students, I was nervous about finding my way in a bigger place, but after being on campus for only a few weeks, I have already found communities that I see myself being a part of. While I am still getting my feet wet, a couple of these communities include FOCUS, the Freshman Connect Team of Duke’s Partnership for Service, and the Global Health Institute student council. I am also thinking about joining the swing-dance club, which is something I never thought I would do before I got to campus!
Although we come from all over and represent a wide range of backgrounds, talents, and passions, the freshman class is already joined together by the blue devil pride and spirit. We all will have our own, unique stories to write as Duke students, and I hope you will join me as I begin to write mine.
