Soft Peaks | Organic Milk Soft Serve Ice Cream
Soft Peaks is the latest craze that's hit Gastown. Located pretty much right beside Portside, Soft Peaks is the only ice cream shop twisting up soft serve made from local, organic milk and premium, all-natural toppings in Vancouver. [caption id="attachment_4940" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Inside Soft Peaks[/caption] I happened to walk by with a couple of friends while waiting for a table at Pourhouse. The line was a bit long, but we had time to kill. [caption id="attachment_4937" align="aligncenter" width="824"] Soft Serve Menu![/caption] Soft serve ice cream has a special place in my heart - I've always been a fan of Mcdonald's delectable soft serve and sundaes as a young chubby child. Soft Peaks is soft serve levelled up. Their ice cream is made from scratch every day using fresh Avalon Organic milk (which tastes really good on its own btw). Apparently, Soft Peaks use of milk as the base reduces the fat by nearly half - the fat content of their ice cream is less than 6%, as opposed to more typically cream-heavy recipes that average 15%. A soft serve is great on its own, but Soft Peaks knows that a fantastic soft serve ice cream can be elevated further with great toppings like yuzu marmalade, organic maple syrup, and Himalayan pink salt. Their featured topping is an interesting one - fresh Okanagan and Fraser Valley honeycomb! [caption id="attachment_4938" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Chunks of honeycomb[/caption] There's lots of choice, and their menu is online. I wasn't sure what to get so I went with a recommendation - The Honeycomb Peak, which is their signature swirl topped with a piece of local honeycomb on top. [caption id="attachment_4941" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Regular Size Honeycomb Peak ($6.75)[/caption] First impressions of this top quality soft serve was that it had the perfect consistency and smoothness. Dense enough to not lose shape, light enough to be fluffy and soft, Soft Peaks makes a mean soft serve. The flavour is clean and creamy. Is it better than Mcdonald's soft serve? Yes. Is it exponentially better? No I don't think so. The toppings, however, really do make a difference. The honeycomb is like a chunk of concentrated honey, but no the kind of honey syrup you would normally throw in coffee. Soft Peaks' honey syrup and honeycomb are sweet but not overly so - some of the best honey I've had! Overall, great ice cream and something that stands out from already fantastic ice cream/gelato desserts like Bella Gelateria, Earnest Ice Cream, and Rain or Shine. Soft Peaks is here to stay! If you're planning on checking them out, don't forget that they're closed Mondays and Tuesdays!
