Year of the Tiger

Year of the stripes: I will take a step back before I reveal myself. I will wait. I will stop giving myself to people who disappear into the trees as soon as they have enough of me. 

Year of baring our teeth: I was born four tigers ago. I have sharpened my teeth each time. Now, I bare them in a smile, but they are sharper than the last time you saw them.

Year of the predator: I learned recently that predators will not turn from a valuable kill to simply chase a thing that nears them. I won’t either.

Year of the blood in the jaws: It tastes the same, but it drips down my chin differently now that I’m smiling.

Year of the ambush: We also pretend to predict hurricane paths, tsunamis, tornados. And I’ve been waiting for years.

Year of strength: High tide is high opportunity when you have claws for grabbing rapids. The river is strong but I am stronger and my claws are sharp.
