He inhales sharply when his left arm stings, right where his soul mark is, and he quickly pushes back the sleeve of his robe to see the silver blur of letters on his arm shift to gold, which can only mean that his soul mate has finally received their mark. He feels his breathing quicken as he thinks back to the moment that the letters had burned themselves into existence on his arm.
Tom sat in the back of the transfiguration classroom and carefully copied the notes on the blackboard onto a blank sheet of parchment. Transfiguration had never been his favorite class, and it mostly had to do with the fact that the teacher was none other than Professor Dumbledore, who had been watching him far too closely for comfort since approaching him in the orphanage to bring him his Hogwarts letter.
It was unnerving, really — the man’s eyes sparkled with legilimency and a sense of superiority that never failed to put Tom on edge. He had made sure to master occlumency long before fifth year, and he had been rather irritated at the amount of times that he had had to use it already. Suddenly there was a burning sensation on his left forearm that caused him to gasp in pain and cradle him arm to his chest before it quickly faded to a dull ache, leaving him clutching at his arm as his classmates turned to watch him.
“Is there a problem, Mr. Riddle?” professor Dumbledore asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice, only noticeable to those who looked for it. Tom shook his head slowly and made a show of fixing his sleeve.
“No sir,” he answered with a pleasant, plastered on smile. Dumbledore only narrowed his eyes at him before turning away to continue the lesson. Abraxas raised an eyebrow at him, only looking back to the professor when Tom shook his head.
Tom waited for a moment before he slowly moved his hand to his left arm, carefully pushing back the fabric of his robes and running his fingers over his skin. He paused when he felt something cool, and glanced down to see three blurred letters in silver that had appeared on his previously unmarred skin, and he felt his heart leap. He had heard tales of the letters and what they meant, but he had never expected that he would be blessed with an almost unheard of soulmate bond. He closed his eyes for a moment and soaked up the knowledge that there was someone out there who was destined to be by his side, and reveled in that feeling of joy.
Of course, he had never imagined that it would take this long before he would even know that his soulmate was alive. The loneliness had eaten away at him over the years, and on some days he had tried to convince himself that he didn’t have a soulmate, that Lady Magic was just playing a trick on him; or that having one would only hold him back and keep him from becoming as great as he wanted to be. He shivers at the thought of the emptiness and hopelessness that he felt at the time. Now he knows that his soulmate is out there, and he feels a surge of possessiveness at the though of his intended.
