Twinks, I place great value on your breakdowns of comedies. I need to know what you think of Hot Shots! and Hot Shots Part Deux.
i'll have to actually do a rewatch of those movies, not least of which is because i've somehow seen hot shots! part deux at least a dozen times as a kid without ever actually seeing hot shots the first, but, rundown from what i can remember of hot shots part deux
really accidentally good peek into the general political american mindset of 1993 - jesus christ, even animaniacs had a saddam hussein joke bit around this era. trace this to comedy now w/r/t the middle east. ugh. bad shit, all around.
this is about where you start to see the transition from really, really fucking dynamite sight gags and straight up good joke fundamentals from stuff like top secret and airplane! police squad!/the naked gun and into an overreliance on 'specific parody' material that requires you to know what it is, exactly, they're referencing for the joke to be funny. the bits like the energizer bunny, for example - totally doesn't hold up anymore, right? and neither do the other pop culture references and specific movie parodies hold up much. you can see good joke ideas, here and there, but the execution isn't as good, and they're not as willing to play it as straight faced - they're winking at the audience too much, you feel me? and the more straight up physical comedy bits - bloodsport parody at the start, the long rambo parody that ends with him shooting the chicken arrow - just aren't as funny as jim abrams' previous material.
from this you can begin to trace to how we went from great parody movies like Airplane! to Meet The Spartans and Dance Movie or whatever the fuck. it became less about making a funny movie, period, and more about just making jokes about whatever is happening now
the bit where the dude kills hundreds of enemy soldiers to a level that's ridiculous that they even count it off like an arcade game is so close to being a good bit but they just managed to fuck it up because it just comes out feeling limp
