I procured a soil sampler and got to work. I'm not testing the nutrient levels of my soil, but there are still interesting results to be drawn.

This is the sample from my Sunshine Sauce tomato. It turns out that her soil and roots are in good shape, she's just getting old. I suppose this is better than having to cure an illness, but it's still sad. :( I thought she'd last 'til August in good condition.

Guess this means a trip to the garden store!

The picture came out kind of ass, but it's still interesting because you can see the transition from topsoil to clay. The soil I use in my pots is a mixture of potting mulch/soil and this stuff. My yard in general is made of patches of clay and sand, with very little actual soil. I got a sample from the middle of the lawn (not pictured, also, yes, I want a native plant lawn) and it was almost entirely clay.
