the wind nipped at her ears, dancing along the edges of her throat contracting in cold. they jogged up the steps, the dull thud of slippers on metal muffling her heavy breaths. she pushed through the metal door to bask in the chilled night sky, stars littered across her vision.
she saw him then, arms stretched above his head and blindfold lazily cast to the side. his hair was still as tall as ever, brushing along the concrete.
she gave him a light tap on the arm, and the tired beam he sent her reminded them of one of the balls of light above her.
he often reminded them of a star: bright and obvious, an attention nabber that could be dying millions of miles away, and no one would be suspecting a thing.
she laid down next to him, feeling his gangly arm immediately come to swaddle their side. his warm breaths washed over her skin, replacing the tingles of cold that tapped on her flesh.
when they turned to look at him, his eyes, heavy, the skin tinged with purple from countless nights without rest, were turned towards the sky, taking in the stars above.
"it's beautiful, isn't it?" he whispered, broken, and so, so tired.
she nodded solemnly, burying their face in the crook of his neck as she felt his pulse slow in comfort.
she thought the same thing about him.
