Sketchbook scanning time (plus one work marker experiment): Boatboys Edition! Commentary below the cut not least because it sidetracks into a huge groupchat quote about Homestuck Aspects at the end lol.
Sol and Rafael don't always get along but they DO find each other reassuring because they make sense in each other's worldviews. Also: I just like to draw them looking gorgeous and dressy together.
Not a lot is hornier than a man in a lace-up corset vest and I will stand by that. The man in question being mean and gorgeous is a bonus.
Rich being the deer in the den of wolves is an incidental thing and mostly it just looks very cool; Rafael's theming after a rabbit/trickster is a lot more textual and intentional and also very fun to draw. Exaggerated size difference. Also very fun and sexy lol.
Connor is forever A Calf as far as the various herds he was raised with are concerned.
The fact that Rich can throw Rafael around like a rubber ball is not what won him over but it didn't HURT.
The sketch prompt was "cry" and I meant to do everybody but instead I got lost thinking about Connor and Rafael in extreme distress, and their masks closing off vs aggressively cracking. Love a character who is always lying at least a little bit. UoU

Marker experiments at work. It did snow on them as I carried the paper home and now Rafael has a pretty little snowflake freckle thing going on.
We've written some supernatural AU stuff, and made Rafael a vampire--in large part because the way he was starved of attention and love for so long dovetails into being starved of blood.
Relatedly: in a supernatural AU Connor is almost certainly a satyr, but I did privately mull over him having some sort of angelic theme for a while because it would fit SO nastily into his various Religious Issues. Birdman Connor isn't canon even to the AU at this point but it was fun.

Act I of Run Aground is officially posted, so TIME FOR ILLUSTRATIONS! The poll result was for process pics, from my sketches to Ray's lines to my colors/renders, so: part 2 to come shortly!
It is known to us that in every version of the universe where Rich is born a Hastings and grows up a Hastings, he's an extremely active foster/adopter of various soldier mod kids. This Rich is not explicitly that Rich, but I wanted to draw Rich with babies.
Somebody at work said the words "mens' tits" and I blacked out and came to in front of a paper full of Sol's cleavage and also that last drawing of Connor.

I truly cannot count the number of times I've just drawn Rich looking vaguely melancholy. He's just so very relaxing to draw.

Various Sandgrens
We discussed in the group chat: Carraway and Sandgren have not fucked but they do have the complicated sort of relationship of two old men who have been actively making each other worse people for several decades. And Sandgren's not in love with Carraway but he is kind of in love with the way he gets to be when he's under Carraway's auspice. In love with the Good Old Days.....

Hair swaps! Liam and Rich's hair is basically the same but longer vs shorter, but the image of Rich with a long undercut was charming enough to me I wanted to swap those two. Sol with a buzzcut, very sharp and butch but also makes his ears SO big. Connor with a ponytail, so pretty very lovely. Bigs his eyes at you. Rafael with twists, nature is healing.
Bonus:
If Helen, and by extension Rich, didn't have Hastings gene-fuckery messing with his phenotype, he would be Irish-American via his dad and Mexican-American via his mom and would actually be able to produce melanin. Which is a wild thought after drawing him so paper-pale for so long but here we are. Edit: looking at this later he should really still be huge and fridge-shaped but traditional media makes it hard to edit after the fact.
I'm sure it'll be brought up later in the story, but Neither Rafael nor Rich seem particularly keen on the details, so I figured I'd ask here. It's mentioned that Sol doesn't have 'lands' of his own. Are the Patricians trying to remake Medieval European Feudalism? Or is is more like gangs fighting over territory. 'this is my turf so other patricians better watch their step in my terrritory' and such.
A little bit of the latter, but mostly more similar to the former. Sol wouldn't be expected to personally own all of his territory and directly funnel resources from the residents up to himself, but he would most likely own some broad chunks of it--in the Fleet's day and age, often urban territory that's fallen into disrepair from abandonment or damage during the societal collapse. Sol would be expected to contribute to fixing the area up, building industry and habitability, making it a successful part of the economy without stepping on the feet of any of his neighboring patricians, who he would be expected to work with and have some degree of alliance/fraternity with.
There is a definite suspicion among the various continental movers and shakers that someday the modern Holy Roman Empire probably intends to make a play to consolidate that power, and turn its oversea patricians into a more official governing body of a new imperial territory. But that wouldn't necessarily be on the minds of the general populace, in an area where a guy just moved in with very powerful and rich allies willing to give him loans at good rates to contribute/invest in the local economy.
