lunar vs solar calendar ?

The Master of calendar is the master of your time. There is generally no great civilisation without a great mastery of astronomy. When you "fix" the beginning of time, you fix and impose your agenda upon others.

In the West, we are in a solar calendar intrinsically mix with ancient roman and christian tradition that we called the gregorian calendar.

I had a discussion with a friend about calendar and notion of time. He said the lunar calendar is obsolete in modern time since it's subjective, and have a gap of about eleven days every years with the gregorian one. The lunar calendar travels around the solar calendar in 32 years. In consequence, new year in lunar calendar can fall in winter, summer, spring, fall... But the truth is, solar system calendar as well is very relative. Otherwise how can you explain that one day a guy called Pope Gregorian woke up in 1582 and said : "Well guys Thursday 4th of October 1582, will be followed by Friday, 15th of October 1582." The reason was to correct a gap between the date of Easter (remember I explained how to calculate it based on Spring equinox) and the actual reality they observed. Equinox was not falling anymore at the date they stated in their old Julian calendar. Reform was needed. And why the solar calendar was moving ? Because it does not take into account the Equinox procession but I'll explain this notion an other time.

Anyway, my point was solar system is not scientifically correct either. Its gap with reality is slower and took many generations to be notice that's why for a human lifespan it's seems stable, but in reality, it's not. Anyway in complex societies of billions people, and for now we still live less than 100 years, I agree it's easier to use it for civilian/business life.

Ok so then what about the lunar calendar? Well it's based on the 29,5 faces of the moon. Simplified in 4 phases : New moon, first quarter, Full moon, last quarter

I personally love the lunar calendar because it's so simple and very close to reality. It doesn't matter if I'm an astrophysicist or an illiterate guy, I can see the moon in the sky with my own eyes and I can tell someone : Hey let's meet and organize a cosy Infinite Tsukuyomi next full moon ! Try to do the same with the sun in the middle of a desert, no devise, no watch, no astronomic lens. You can count days with sunset and sunrise. But good luck to decide how many months have passed. Problem fix immediately with the moon. A new moon = a new month. By the way a little bit of etymology Month derives from the word moon in english and it's the case in other languages like in japanese notably. 月 (tsuki/gatsu) is both the kanji of the moon and the month. Our fours weeks per month system is imitation of the four moon's phases.

Lunar calendar is an universal cycle, out of human's whims, out of seasons, out of equinox procession. I'm not surprise it's the favourite one in many traditions and religions. Islam is a perfect example. The holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, starts (today) in a new moon and ends in an other new moon. Other tradition use the lunar system like chinese, vietnamese traditions... the list is none exhaustive.

The moon has its one personal and independent cycle around Earth. And I think that's how we can use the moon in our modern time. For instance when you want to start a new personal project, new life style, new diet, anything intimate to you only : take the moon as your witness. 29 days is a reasonable amount of day and by checking the sky every night you are really aware about time passing.
