The benefit of WA’s new 3 cent feed in tariff

Recently, Western Australia has launched a new scheme for solar buyback in which the solar owners will get a certain amount of rewards for exporting excess solar power in the day.

So, from 6th November 2020 onwards, a new time slot has been set by the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme for the payments received by the owners for exporting electricity from their solar systems. The time slot is between 3 pm and 9 pm for 10c/kWh and 3c/kWh for the rest of the time.

This scheme has been launched to discourage the solar owners from exporting solar power during day hours and instead of doing that, they will get paid for the solar export if they export the excess electricity between 3 pm and 9 pm. During these hours the demand for solar power increases and the solar output get drops off gradually because there will be less sunlight.

Apart from that, WA quoted that the DEBS prices are a better reflection if we look at the wholesale cost of energy. So basically the point is, solar owners will get paid more if they export solar power between 3 pm and 9 pm as the wholesale energy prices will be at the peak. Whereas they will be get paid less when they export solar power during other times as the wholesale energy price will be less.

If you have already installed a solar system before November 6, 2020, then this new scheme will not be valid for you. But you can opt into DEBS if you wish to, otherwise, you will be stick to your current feed-in tariff only until and unless you upgrade your solar system or add a new battery along with it.

What if I’m considering getting solar?

If you are thinking about switching to solar power, then no doubt you are making a good decision as solar is still a great investment and provides better savings as well. We all know Western Australia is one of the sunniest states, so this means your system could pay itself in the coming few years. This ensures that it will definitely deliver better savings for many years.

You should do certain things to take advantage of these new DEBS rates:

Always try to get west-facing solar panels set up or you can also install the solar panels in the combination of the west and north-facing direction. This will generate electricity for further use in the evening when most people require electricity, and you will enjoy the benefits of the peak 10c feed-in tariff.

Use as much solar energy generated during the daytime as possible in your home rather than exporting energy at other times for 3c. Remember one thing big savings will come from not paying for electricity rather than earning from the export of solar power. So if you are on the DEBS scheme or not, try to maximize usage of solar power during daytime time rather than nighttime.

You can make a better decision by adding a battery to your system. After getting a battery you will be able to transfer the excess solar power to the battery and store it for further use rather than buying electricity for the evening. Thus, when the sun goes down, the battery will provide electricity to run your home on free solar power. Thanks to DEBS, the customer getting a solar panel along with a battery will save more than the customer doing just a few months ago before the DEBS scheme launched.

More analysis of the Trump solar tariff​ decision on the U.S. solar market.
