Your opinion on BBC Sherlock not doing the female characters very well
(This has been sitting in my inbox for aaaaaages, BTW...I have access again so I'm slowly clearing things out and answering as many old asks as I can).
I think that it's something they seem to be acknowledging (though not always in the best of ways...from what I've heard of the one panel that was supposed to be for the female actresses on the show, the fact that the men on the panel got most of the talking time and say on discussion topics kind of rubbed me wrong) if TAB is any indication, and I have hope that series 4 may be better, but I'm not entirely sure it will be? I think the problem is that when most people think of Sherlock Holmes in general, they think of "Holmes & Watson," and with the exception of Elementary and maybe a few other adaptations, you get two men. And while there are some fascinating women in the BBC!verse, the vocal "majority" of fans want the two men. And that seems to be who Mofftiss have catered to so far.
Now, will they always continue to cater to them? Maybe not. Mary got added in series 3, and she could be a character who's given an interesting role where she's not put to the sidelines as support (like Molly) or put in an antagonistic position (like Sally) or being "the dupe" (like Janine). And the roles for those three women could be improved in season 4 as well (if the latter two actresses return, at least...I'll be sad if Vinette Robinson doesn't come back because damn it, Sally deserve the chance to show she's grown as a character just as much as Sherlock has). It's just a matter of who's on their creative team and how much they feel like listening to the rightful criticisms that have been put against them.
If they can give me one episode next season that passes the Bechdel test I'll consider that a good start to real improvement, and I'll have hope it will only get better from there. If not...well, they probably won't change, sadly. But the fact Rachel Talalay is on board to direct an episode gives me hope so my fingers are crossed, you know? We can only hope for the best at this point and then just see what we get when it all goes through editing.
