Grace couldn't believe what she was reading. Mariela's text completely threw her off guard; but now she knew why Max never came back to the party last night. That stupid fucking bike. She knew he shouldn't have taken that out to get the ice. It wasn't safe; and she had a perfectly good car he could have borrowed. Then he wouldn't be lying in a hospital bed unconscious; and she wouldn't have woken up only to immediately start having one of the worst anxiety attacks she had in a long time.
Her thoughts were racing more than a mile a minute. She couldn't handle this right now. She knew Mariela said he'd be okay; but what if he wasn't? What if something happened; and Max got worse? She couldn't lose him. He was the one person in her life besides Lina she could turn to for anything. He never judged her; and he helped her through all the shit she'd gone through over the years.
As her panic grew, breathing became more difficult; and she started to feel incredibly nauseous. She wanted to go wake up Chloe and tell her what she just found out; but she couldn't even bring herself to get up from where she had collapsed on the floor next to her bed. As tears streamed down her face, she tried to remember the breathing exercises she had learned in therapy. She had to calm down. She had to calm down enough to be able to drive to the hospital since she was planning on waiting there until he woke up. She had to be there for him like he had for her all those times.
Finally composing herself enough, she stood up and grabbed one of her duffel bags, packing it with some close for both herself and for Mariela. She was just gonna drive over in her pajamas. She didn't wanna waste any more time. As she got into her car, she finished up texting Mariela before putting her car in drive and heading towards the hospital. Maxie has to be okay. She thought to herself. I can't lose him...
Emma swung her legs on the âbig kid chair,â her feet a good couple inches from the floor. She glanced over at the door, hearing her mother talk to her principal for what felt like hours. A couple students trying to go home sick passed her as she waited, staring at her bloody lip and the dried bruise around her eye. She wondered if they saw Peter Thompson in the nurseâs office who looked a bazillion times worse than she did.
âEmma-Leigh.â Her big brown eyes looked up toward the door as her principal opened it. âCan you come in here?âShe sighed and slid off the chair to go into the office. Her mother watched her as she walked in, waving her over so she can inspect her eye.
âEmma-Leigh. What am I going to do with you?â she mumbled as she gently ran her hand over the bruise. Emma stared at the floor until her motherâs hand left her cheek and she climbed onto the seat next to her.
Her principal had already sat down and was staring at Emma with a long pointed look. âCan you tell me why you are here, Emma-Leigh?â She stared swinging her feet back and forth and shrugged. âBecause you called me in.â Her principal glared at her. âYou beat Peter Thompson and then stabbed him with a fork.â
Emma couldnât help grinning a little. Yes, she did beat up the seven year old, although the fork was a last minute thing. She had shoved him down in the cafeteria and after he punched her eye, she grabbed the first thing her little hands could grab onto and hit him with it. Unfortunately it was a fork and it lodged itself into his shoulder. The sound of his scream afterward was what stopped the fight, not the main faculty members that came running to the boyâs aid. âYeah. I did.â
Her mother rubbed the bridge of her nose, an action that Emma noticed she does quite a lot and most of the time when Emma was in trouble. âWhy would you beat the poor boy?â
She couldnât meet the gazes of either adult as she kept her head down and stared at her principalâs desk. âWe want an answer,â said the principal.
âMomma said that I canât say one of the words he said and I donât wanna get in trouble.â It didnât occur to her that it didnât even matter since she was already in a heaps load of trouble. Her mother put a warm hand on her daughterâs arm and gently ran her thumb against her skin. âItâs okay, dear. Just tell us what he said. You wonât get in trouble for that.â
Emma looked up at her mother and then looked back down again. âHe said that you were a dirty slut and that was why I didnât have a daddy.â The air around her got thicker and she wondered if she was going to get in trouble for saying the bad word after all.
âEmma-Leigh.â She looked up at her principal. âWhile I am aware that the other kids can be a little mean, this is your fourth fight in the month and a student got badly injuredââ
âI didnât mean to stab him. I didnât want to hurt him that badly.â Although Emma couldnât be sure if that was true. She didnât remember a lot of what she was thinking during her fight, but she knew that she was really angry and that all she wanted was for him and everyone else at her stupid school to stop calling her and her mother names.
âThat may be the case, but you still punched him several times. And I am sorry, Emma-Leigh but we cannot tolerate that behavior here any longer. You are expelled from our school.â Emma looked up at her, her big brown eyes pleading for another chance. Her principal met her gaze, her face softening at Emmaâs sincerity, but ultimately, shook her head.
âIâm sorry, Ms. Carick,â she said addressing her mother, âbut Emma-Leigh cannot be here anymore. She is too violent.â She glanced at Emma for a moment. âAnd may I suggest that you get her in some form of therapy. She has a lot of anger.â
Her mother nodded as she stood up from her seat. âIs that all.â Her principal told her that it was and Emma followed her mother out of the office. Once they were, her mother grabbed Emmaâs arm and pulled her in close.
âYouâre going to apologize to that boy and hopefully they donât try suing us.â Emma shook her head and tried to tear her arm away from her motherâs tight grip.
âIâm not apologizing. Iâm not sorry for hitting him. He deserved it. Last week he said that you were a dirty no good whore and that I was going to grow up to be like you. And then the other day he saidââ
âIt doesnât matter what he says, Emma-Leigh. You are supposed to be the bigger person and not fight back.â
She scrunched up her face and tugged at her arm to try to free herself. âIf heâs calling us names then Iâm not gonna let him.â
âIf heâs called you names before then why did you hit him today?â Emma stared at the floor, no wanting to answer her motherâs question. When it became clear that they would not be moving until she did, she murmured, âThey all started laughing.â
Her mother pulled her into a hug and gently pet her long brown hair. âOh Emma-Leigh.â Emma wrapped her little arms around her mother and let herself cry on her shoulder. She hated school and everyone in it. They always laughed at her and teased her and told her that she was no better than any scum on the street. Sheâd fight every one of them if she could. âHoney, fighting isnât the answer. You have to be the better than them and ignore it, not stab them with forks.â
âI donât wanna. I just want them to stop laughing.â Her mother picked up her daughter and brought her to their car. Emma watched the school that she had been kicked out of and couldnât help thinking that it wasnât fair. They were the ones that laughed at her and they were making her leave. None of it was fair.Â
