Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки / The Night Before Christmas (1961)
“Solokha from Nikolai Gogol’s “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka” for my Carousel series 🌚 “
Solokha, 3rd piece of the Carousel series 🌚
Sveta Has // Sveta Shubina
Scythian Golden Comb, Early 4th century, Scythian civilization, Ukraine,
Made by Greeks probably to Scythian taste, from Solokha,
The sculptural group (the crest handle), separated from the line of teeth by two strips with figures of lions sandwiched between them, depicts the battle between the Scythians. A foot warrior hurries to help the rider, and their opponent (his horse lies wounded on the ground) tries to confront the superior forces of the enemy. The figures are unusually expressive, dynamic, the ethnic type, the characteristic features of the costume, etc. are perfectly conveyed. At the same time, the composition itself (a symmetric group, mass balance, extreme clarity of each component and a sense of the whole) is typical of ancient art of the classical period.
