Today was the day, and to be frank, Helen could not have been more nervous. With an hour to go, she hadn’t even brought herself to leave her flat yet. She’d practically ran home from ork, and in a flurry of discarded clothes, makeup and perfume, she found herself presentable enough to leave the comfortable confines of her flat. She knew how it would work, wherever she would go, her soulmate would find her as her numbers rolled down to zero, but the more she thought about it, the more the little metal plaque on her wrist began to itch.
With 10 minutes to go, Helen hadn’t managed to find herself in anywhere remotely romantic, she’d barely left her flat after the struggle of finding out what to wear. The only option she had left was to cross the street to the Blue Hill Diner, with the hope she’d get a slice of their wonderful apple pie to calm her nerves.
On minute left and her heart was racing, so much so that she swore she could hear it pulsing at an unnatural speed. Her plate of apple pie sat almost untouched in front of her as she scanned the door for a glimpse of her soulmate. She knew that whoever it would be, they would be perfect for her, perfect in every way, but still she couldn’t shake the horrible knot in her stomach or the lump in her throat.
With a sharp pinch, the metal plaque on her wrist detached itself, and Helen hadn’t realised she’d been staring at her wrist when the counter finished. Eyes darting up, Helen caught sight of a familiar face, one of the most beautiful women she had ever laid eyes on, and a warm smile spread across her features.
To be honest, Cailyn had, for the most time of her life, ignored the metal
wristband with the green numbers. From time to time she was forced to
check the time, for curious friends or sometimes her gaze just wandered
and landed on the strange device. She hadn't been counting but the last
time she looked at the clock was at least six months ago, if not more.
Of course she cared about meeting her soulmate, but she didn't like knowing
exactly when. She wanted to meet them casually, without freaking and being
nervous.
And so, today, like on any other day, Cailyn was working in the Blue Hill Diner,
serving guests and chatting with friends like she always did. When she wasn't
facing the door, someone came in and another waitress ran to serve the new
customer before Cailyn could even attempt to move in their general direction.
A few minutes later, when Cailyn had no more guests to serve, she decided
to go around and wipe the tables, better do it now while it was calm.
She came close to the back of the restaurant where fewer guests sat and
found a familiar person sitting only three tables away.
The metallic clatter of her own and Helen's wristband falling off interrupted
her. Dumbfounded and quite shocked, Cailyn looked down at her clock on
the floor.
She found Helen smiling when she looked back up and Cailyn couldn't help but mimic the smile. They had met before, so it was a surprise that Helen was her soulmate - not a bad one, that's for sure - (she couldn't really believe it, but that's how it was), but apparently that's what fate had planned for them.
"Hey. Guess where meant to be, huh?"
