I’d much rather sing these songs to people by the hundreds than talk about the subjects contained therein over coffee with one or two people. It’s just an easier—and more cathartic—way for me to heal and communicate.

Do you know if Mackenzie is a fan of/knows about the band Mount Moriah? I find a lot of parallels in the music/lyrics (dark imagery, amazing voice), although MM is more alt-country. Also I was just reading this super interesting interview with Heather McEntire on the Songwriters on Process blog. If you read the second to last question, Heather is also a big fan of Joan Didion and Cormac McCarthy, just like Mackenzie. It would be amazing to see them tour together.
Interviewer: It is the middle of the year and lots of people are drawing up 2013 half-term reports—our top 3 albums are Torres, Caitlin Rose & Mount Moriah—what are yours?
Mackenzie Scott: Wow—thanks! My top three thus far are The National, Waxahatchee, and Marnie Stern. I finally just got the new Nick Cave record, too, so I have high hopes for that one.
I guess this proves that Scott has heard of Mount Moriah (even if it was just this once). But I think she would have mentioned if she had been a fan.
And you’re right, that McEntire interview is interesting. The Didion+McCarthy thing you mention is one thing she has in common with Scott, as is the fact that she studied writing academically (creative writing in her case, songwriting in Scott’s), but I think there are more contrasts than parallels. Different approaches, similar styles. You may be right: that might make a good tour.

Interviewer: So now that you’ve played one of the more well-known music festivals in SXSW, what did you think of it? Did you have a good time?
Mackenzie Scott: I’ve had a really fantastic time, every bit of it. SXSW is about as DIY as it gets, which I love. Everyone is so connected and you can just run into anyone. I’ve met a lot of people here, who have had a lot of great things to say.

Interviewer: We were lucky enough to see you play twice at SXSW—did you enjoy the festival?
Mackenzie Scott: I did. It was physically exhausting and draining to haul the gear around by hand for five days, but I’d consider the experience worth the effort. I’m really thankful for the momentum the record received after we played SXSW.

Like, you’re sweating, and you smell awful, and you’re carrying all of your heavy gear, you know, by hand, walking from venue to venue. Then you play a quick set with no soundcheck, and then you strip it back down and you go to the next one, and I love that. I think it’s great. I think that every musician should have to do that at some point. ’Cause how else are you gonna earn your stripes, you know?”

Although I love to have fun with my band mates and laugh all day long, I try not to talk too much when we’re in the van. It preserves my energy and my voice, and it gives me time to be in my head for a bit. There isn’t much opportunity for personal space and alone time on the road. Aly (Lady Lamb the Beekeeper) suggested I try it when we toured together in June [2013] and it absolutely saved me.

Ryan McFadden, who produced the record with me, has synesthesia and was constantly on the same wavelength as me in the studio. I would sit there and blurt out a mesh of descriptions and feelings that made absolutely no sense, just in terms of how I wanted a song to sound, and then he would interpret that into a color or something visual in his mind, which ended up translating into the songs as I was hearing them in my head, and as you hear them on the record. He’s truly incredible.
