AU where Sam doesn't die at Cold Oak so Dean doesn't make a deal. Everything else is the same: they still open the Hell Gate, the demons (and John) still get out, and they still kill Yellow Eyes.
But they let out hundreds of demons, and it's not a ghoul that takes out Kate Milligan but a demon, and Adam sells his soul to get her back. He's got a year, and he spends it hunting demons.
Adam never makes the connection between those reckless assholes who opened the Hell Gate, Sam and Dean Winchester, and his absent father, John Winchester; he still thinks John is some kind of a salesman—no clue about his own legacy—and Adam's a natural, taking down every monster he finds. Kate is his Bobby, coordinating Adam's hunts, gathering lore, and working frantically to find a loophole that will keep her son from going to Hell.
