I am tired of the arguments about how the Valkyrie shouldn’t have survived and won the blood rite. Like the sheer number of people I’ve seen say “oh gwyn doesn’t count as carynthian because Emerie had to carry her up the mountain” or “none of them should have survived this rite that kills so many warriors”
You’re missing the whole point.
Without Nesta, Emerie would have frozen to death in the river.
Without Gwyn, Nesta and Emerie wouldn’t have survived being discovered at Bellius’s camp.
Without Emerie, Gwyn wouldn’t have made it up the last stretch of the mountain.
They’re a team. They fought their way to each other so they could climb the mountain together and win. It’s expressed consistently in the books that so many people die because of outside feuds or believing body counts are glory. The Valkyrie don’t care about that. They’re just trying to protect each other, they’re proving something to themselves.
SJM very much shows us that Nesta’s stand at the Pass is a callback to Enalius doing the same—she’s retelling her own myth—but it’s also a retelling of the story of Cassian, Azriel, and Rhys. Not even a subtle one tbh.
Being hated and underestimated by Illyrian leaders? Check. Deliberately separated at the start? Check. Fought to find each other? Check. Took specifically the Breaking path up Ramiel? Check. One of them injured and needing to be hauled up the mountain by another? Check. One of them providing cover from behind? Check. Winning in spite of the illyrians? Check.
The parallels between the Valkyries winning the Rite and the bat boys winning it is not supposed to be lost on you. SJM absolutely gave us these details about the bat boys so that we could see the similarities at the end of ACOSF. Whenever any of the bat boys talk about the Rite, it’s about how “we” won it. They are all very aware that they won it together. Because they worked as a team.
“But Cass Az and Rhys were the most powerfu—“
The blood rite turns off magic. They didn’t have their all powerful magic. Just the training that they had received from Illyrians who hated them and actively wanted them to fail and die, and the power of friendship. They were not any more powerful than Nesta, Emerie, and Gwyn. They were likely physically stronger, but the girls didn’t use brute strength to win the Rite. They were mostly using big brain tactics.
“But they only trained for a few months! The bat boys trained for years!”
And? They all passed the qualifiers. They were ready and competent enough to participate. Cass and Azriel knew it, and the Illyrian generals that came and watched knew it. You not thinking it’s believable doesn’t actually matter. Canon says they were just as qualified as the bat boys and all the other Illyrian males to enter the rite. The qualifiers literally exist to see if a warrior is ready to participate in the rite. They all passed.
If you think the Valkyrie shouldn’t have won I just want to know: why are you so threatened by female characters being as strong and competent as their male counterparts? Why does that bother you so much? And why these females specifically, in a universe full of over powered female characters?
