there were still days madison allowed herself to remember what life had been like before somerton. the sun of the georgia heat on her skin as she and melissa laid out on the back porch, smelling of sunscreen and fresh lemonade next to them as her older sister wiled away the hours talking about high school life, boys, friends, the ups and downs of being a teenager while madison listened patiently. she’d wanted to be the same for logan, though that hadn’t quite worked out - for a number of reasons. but logan had other siblings, a whole slew of them, and logan wasn’t haunted by a life that she could have had if only things had been different.
not that madison would ever complain about it. not really. she was fortunate enough to have been taken in by the brant’s, that they’d found a family who loved them as if they were their own. who took one look at surely madison, frustrated and angry and said ‘i’ll take her’ and gave a home to not only herself, but her baby sister too.
the brant home was madison’s home, as much as anything ever had been. but lately she’d been nostalgic, more and more, and it wasn’t uncommon for any number of the brant’s to find her in the garden she’d raised for the past decade in the back yard, smelling of dirt and grass as she cared for the plants just as her mother had taught her once.
it was sebastian who found her this time - her foster father, though she’d been too old for him to officially adopt when the time came that she’d have even considered it - her head turned slightly when she heard the back door open and close to see who would find her covered in dirt this time. “i didn’t mean to wake anyone,” she apologized - the hour was still early, most of the others were probably asleep. “i just wanted to make sure the spring bulbs were protected - we had a lot more snow this year than normal.”
