1,000th Post!!!
alright! 1,000 posts! what a milestone.
apologies in advance for a long one, but I feel that this is an occasion worthy of discussing at length a very important topic: Music.
i chose this topic because music is very important to me, and because my tumblr hero, somethingaboutdaftpunk, asked for recommendations :) so without further ado:
top of the line:
Daft Punk (obvs you know about this one sadp :) ) - incredible electronic duo. great way to get into electronic music, and you never get tired of them. sonically interesting without being obnoxiously experimental, just solid electronic classics. best album is Discovery, but they are all great. plus they wear awesome robot disguises. could go on forever, but i'd better get on with it
Boston - classic rock. (quite a jump, i know) my favorite before Daft Punk introduced me to electronic. Eponymous debut album especially. almost entirely played and recorded by Tom Scholz, with the exception of the amazing vocals of Brad Delp, who wrote the last and worst song on the album, and the drums. Tom Scholz invented a guitar pedal that he used for the first time on the record, and it is widely used to this day. he also used weird electronic effects by messing with the tape recordings. the second album, Don't Look Back, was alright, but nothing could compare to the original.
Fiona Apple - alternative/pop. Fiona Apple is probably the best combination of weird and talent since, like, David Bowie. Her music focuses on her gifted piano playing and deep haunting voice (though she can get up there), however there is a good deal of rock and electronic mixed in. pretty experimental, but pleasing if you have an ear for it. her lyrics are simply incredible, like something you would study in an advanced english class. she uses all this to talk about how weird she is and all her troubles with men. so basically like a weirder, awesomer version of taylor swift (nothing against her though, please don't unfollow me swifties, ily). all albums are great, and i recommend listening to them in order to see her progresssion, but her best is probably Extraordinary Machine. its either less experimental or just does the best job of making the experimentality palatable, can't make up my mind which
honorable mentions:
Steve Burns - um... pop i guess. Steve's got a weird mix of rock and electronic in his songs. check out his album Songs for Dustmites on youtube. crazy thing is, he's a really good musician, and also the original host of Blue's Clues!
anything you might hear on a classic rock station - i really like pretty much any rock before the 90's and you could include more pop kind of stuff like Peter Gabriel, David Bowie. nothing against 90's music, but the best rock came out before then. usual suspects: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, etc., plus other slightly less well known classic groups. might expand on this later when its not 4:00 in the morning.
assorted electronic acts
i'll try to come back and add more to this. good night everyone. thanks for a great first 1,000 posts, I can't wait to do it again!
