Wow, I think this is the nicest ask I've ever had - thank you so much, this really means the world to me 🥰
The universe of Somewhere Darker is a place that won't leave me alone, to be honest. It's grown much bigger than Milex in my head and has somehow found its way into my other writing projects. I can't tell yet where it will go, but it's fair to say that some of the characters from that story are still very much alive for me...
Thank you so much again for your lovely comments! ❤
Hey so um, this is a bit embarrassing. But i was considering reading your story Somewhere Darker. But I'm a bit scared if there's stuff that's gonna freak me out 🙈
I just accidentally stumbled upon a fic earlier today that made me really uncomfortable and I don't want it happening again.
So if it's not too much too ask could you maybe explain just a bit about what to expect in the story? You don't need to spoil what happens.. Just so I know if I'll be able to handle it 💜
Hi anon :)
No need to be embarrassed, I'm always happy to answer questions about my fic :)
Personally, I wouldn't class Somewhere Darker as a particularly disturbing story, as I think the "horror" elements in it are very mild, but it's difficult for me to say whether or not it would freak you out without knowing more about what sorts of stories make you feel uncomfortable.
What I can say is that I was very conscientious in my use of tags, and I tried to warn for everything I could think of which might cause discomfort. The fic does not qualify for any of the major Archive warnings, but I "chose not to warn" just because I thought the slightly implied dubcon was a bit of a grey area.
If that was your main area of concern, I can reassure you that this element is, in my opinion, pretty subtextual and there is no sexual violence in the fic, nor any other forms of graphic violence, and no major character deaths.
As to the other ask which you also sent me, whilst Somewhere Darker certainly isn't a fluffy story, I wouldn't say that it has an unhappy ending.
I think I'm going to throw this one out to the fandom, as given that I'm the author of said fic, I'm aware that I may not have the most objective view of my own story.
Would anyone else who has read Somewhere Darker be able to offer any opinions (without spoilers) or reassurance to this anon?
@richiebrook @lanatural-books @glorious-blackout @tightredpants I'm pretty sure you guys have all read it, feel free to chip in :)
I‘m literally sitting in my car in the parking lot, stuffing my face with McDonald‘s cheeseburgers (Good morning) and reading your fic Somewhere Darker while I‘m actually supposed to go to IKEA but I just cannot stop reading, it‘s sooo good omg!
Hahaha thank you for that mental image, you've made me laugh 😄 Sorry to hear that you're trapped in the parking lot, but I'm chuffed that you're enjoying the story that much! 💚
The reason you stand out to me as a writer is that you managed to combine Milex with horror (and an impossible amount of TBHC references). Somewhere Darker was a masterpiece. Also, #EYCTE nostalgia.
Awww thank you so much, that really means a lot to me! 💜 I discovered from writing Somewhere Darker that I do enjoy writing crossover fics and blending genres, so I'm really happy if you liked that aspect of my writing as I think I'd like to do more projects like that in future :)
Fic ask: # 5 for your TBHC fic.
Thanks for the ask! I think the hardest part of Somewhere Darker to write was probably when I had to completely rewrite Annalise's character from scratch.
In my original outline, she was supposed to be the good guy, imprisoned against her will in a parallel dimension by the evil Mark, and in the end she was supposed to help our boys escape.
I realised halfway through writing the fic that I'd made a mistake. She wasn't the good guy after all. That meant I had to go back and completely change her characterisation to make her seem more enigmatic and sinister, and that of course had an impact on the rest of the story and resulted in some headache inducing rewrites.
But it was worth it in the end - I think Annalise turned out to be a far better villain than a saviour ;)
Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake but I just wanted to drop a line and say how much I absolutely loved reading Somewhere Darker! I stayed up to finish it and ending up staying even later just thinking about the ending! You did an incredible job building on top of the tbhc material and making it your own. As a fellow Stephen King fan, i say that you are an excellent horror/thriller writer and I would be happy to read whatever else you write in the genre!
Wow... thank you anon, this honestly means so much to me. I'm working on an original project in the urban gothic / horror genre at the moment and this kind of feedback really motivates me to keep writing ❤
3 and 4 for Somewhere Darker :D
My favourite line of narration from this fic is in the very first chapter:
"Alex’s kisses were like a parallel reality that Miles had stumbled into by mistake."
I love this line because it foreshadows both the theme and plot of the entire story. It hints at how Miles' and Alex's repressed desires have led them to this new liminal space in their relationship - this strange alternate reality as represented by the hotel - and it also echoes future events, such as when Miles really does stumble into a parallel reality by mistake :)
As for the dialogue, it's really hard to pick a favourite! I have to say, though, I had the most fun writing the snarky back-and-forth between Miles and Annalise - they got on each other's nerves to the max!
My favourite exchange between them was probably this one, because it made me laugh and because I enjoyed using Miles's incredulity to poke fun at my own plot ;)
“It’s not a magic door,” she said. “It’s a channel between two planes of reality.”
“Sounds like a fuckin’ magic door to me–”
“Shut up and look at the screens,” Annalise said.
