Somewhere Far Beyond was a bridge album for Blind Guardian, making significant strides towards the band they would soon become while at least nodding to their thrash roots. Nonetheless, “Theatre of Pain” was arguably their most decisive break from the relentless slamming of old, leaning heavily on symphonic elements and emphasizing drama over riffs and aggression. Hansi Kürsch’s vocals breathed much more in between the spaces, which certainly must’ve been much easier on his throat, but he also sounded more in control and able to home in on his favorite fantasy literature. At the same time, “Theatre of Pain” was still a bit amateurish, especially compared to subsequent albums, and the track perhaps veered too far towards symphonic metal. But it found Blind Guardian planting a stake in the ground, and was ultimately a preview of what was soon to come.
