Long story short its not on my iPod anymore so I was going to youtube and this was on the home screen. I'm sooo pissed I guess its just piss me off night or something -_- 😡😡😡😬😠😠😡😡
Over It
Friday was probably the worst day of teaching ever. Kids were not engaged and not in a place to learn. It was fantastic.
Some excerpts:
Me: So what's your reading about today?
Student: Some vato and his music. He's a crazy vato though because he talks about his music and says it magical.
In the past few weeks, learned a great deal about why teens "hate school" so much. They don't just say that they don't like school but they really, really don't like being there. I feel like everyone just tells them to "deal with it" and reminds them what a great "privilege" it is that they get to be in school. However, after being in schools this semester, I'd challenge anyone who says that to a teen.
Imagine being stuck in a building for 8 hours every day, having your bathroom breaks regulated, and feeling no agency over what you are supposed to be "learning." As adults, we would go insane. So, I can only imagine the frustration a teen feels. Are their responses always the best? Obviously, not, but do you blame them? There are some serious issues within the system and the schools function more like a prison than a place for thinkers.
Would I send my hypothetical children to a place like this? NO.
Another Example:
Classroom Phone Rings
Teacher: yes? *pauses to listen* Yes, she is here today.
Student 1: are they calling to see if I'm in class again?
Teacher: yes.
Student 1: Gaaah! I hate that! They act like i'm some kind of criminal gonna walk out of school or something?? They pulled me out of class randomly to give me a drug test!
Student 2: Hey! Me too! Did you get in trouble?
Student 1: NO cuz I passed it! I don't even do drugs.
No wonder there is such resistance. I've seen students look me dead in the eye and holding onto the last bit of power they feel they have by refusing to learn, refusing to speak, refusing to engage. What are we supposed to do as educators and parents? Yell at them until they comply? Tell them what a horrible decision refusing is? Send them out of the classroom to an alternate school? None of those are the answers and those are the only solutions that are being commonly exercised. (There is a smaller faction of teachers that are approaching education through a much more appreciative lens and they have found it to be slow, difficult and WORTHWHILE work.)
The only time I've seen this change is when a teacher is consistently kind, patient and respectful (yes, even when a student's behavior does not merit this). When the teacher makes space for student's existing identities in the context of the classroom.
I've seen little bits of this and it's beautiful. So, maybe I'm just a hippie, idealist twenty something but I love these students, damnit!
