As a veteran Sonic fan that’s been around the drive-thru a few times, it is so refreshing to see how all the different and nuanced ways the fandom treats the characters now compared to when I first joined. Idk if that’s because we’re all older and hopefully have wisdom teeth, idk if maybe I just wasn’t around the correct group of people online (it just didn’t seem that big back on deviantart/fanfiction.net??? and i was active for YEARS mind you and had a decent following) but now it is SO COOL like! look:

The exploration of Sonic’s trauma in general///TONS of Fleetaway Sonic/Dark Sonic which yes, it was a thing and there were the few that did but I had never seen it explored tHIS muCH in the fandom where like--I’m seeing my mans going apeshit in fanwork daily 

Shadow FINALLY being more recognized as the short-ass, tiny-ass, elf-ass, munchkin-ass, petite-ass king that he is i swEAr I was one of the few who headcannoned him being shorter than Sonic back then 

Also the flexibility with Shadow’s character and that he is no longer just the emo/edgelord?? overly dominant/aggressive lover???of the group???  he is just simply a fluffy Dumb of Ass Alien Freak™ creature who smells like a natural Sleep Aid and raws coffee beans 

In fact, seeing Shadow’s alien biology explored more outside of the naughty parts of fandom has been very fun and interesting to see and you all are very creative 

Rouge!! Being!!! the babysitter/mom!!! of the group!! because she is one of the oldest!! and most empathetic of all the characters!! 

The Exposure of Miles Prower as the manipulative and borderline *dr.eggman voice* we aren’t that different you and i little son of a biscotti that he is

Blazamy just. getting all the flowers. It existed then, yes of course but I see it more nowadays and it’s what we deserve

Tikal just. Swole as hell. What a beautiful concept. 

I’m sure there is more I’m missing but that’s just what I first noticed when I hopped back into the pool recently. And it’s a very different, very comfortable and fun pool now too

What are your shadow headcanons? :)

yyyYEYYYYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS, um,,,,,, a few,,,,,,,,, some of which i mention on my drawings sometimes but yes yes a real list--

It is cannon he eats coffee beans, but I figure he just about raws anything he can get his hands on: popcorn kernels, uncooked noodles, yeast packets, raw meat--the only one that makes sense is like fruit, veggies and nuts lmao either because he likes it that way or he just doesn't want to/can NOT cook for his life. Also eats shitloads of junk food in general

Shadow is hilarious and to expand on that; he can be petty, he is deadpan and speaks very confidently so who would doubt a word he says ("no one would believe you" which is the toppest tier of humor), he makes jabs with those he is comfortable with or like,,when he is enjoying his rivalry with Sonic in general (cannon actually, Sonic Heroes as source and even SA2 a lil "you're not even good enough to be my fake" is WAY funnier in JP version, comics and other games mark on this too, please add if you know them!) He is just a Funny Lil Guy whether he is aware of it or not

He is touch-starved but refuses to admit it. He doesn't want to appear weak/desperate but c'mon. Mans been isolated and self-isolates cuz that's what he's used to, what he generally prefers but deep down he craves some kind of connection to others. He always has, which is why he got so Hecked up in his backstory

His actual rival is Amy Rose.

LOVES nature!!!!! I can't see him living on earth and NOT taking in some kind of interest in the world around him when he grew up surrounded by metal, steel, and a more "sterile" environment in general. I think it's cannon he likes sunsets anyway??

Listens to all music, but I like to think rap is his actual fav. He writes poetry (very silly poetry sometimes because he is FUNNY which is CANNON) and rap is???? poetry??? so. bam. he and knuckles vibe to it. They have sessions on angel island every tuesday night (6:47pm)

I don't actually imagine him with any visible alien biology, but I clearly love the idea of him fucking around with people about it

Shadow is immortal, but I think if he got knucked around enough he can croak. i think that's just me projecting tho since immortality sounds horrifying and i wish him the best

He has a crush on Super Sonic/WereSonic/(Sonic in general) but he's more visibly flustered around those forms. I like to think when Shadow gave his life after Final Hazard and saw how empathetic and kind Sonic was being towards him as his strength faltered that "Super Sonic" was cemented in his mind. He already canonically respects Sonic A LOT so my hc steps a lil further to this falling under a very interesting mix of admiration/idolization (Sonic's strength, heroism, selflessness) and something,,,,more. Not that he'll acknowledge it. Openly. Except with Amy or Rouge/Omega.

He's good with kids!!! so he and Tails have formed a very honest and mutual Relationship™ where they both can see right through the bullshit and just kinda cut to the chase and help/enable their vices together

Shadow and Omega live with Rouge and she is everyone's Auntie including Shadow. I LOVE this HC soooo much.

I love the hc that Shadow is autistic!!! I'm not sure if I'm comfortable saying the "Shadow" I draw is autistic cuz I don't know enough about autism to claim it, so I don't want to accidentally misrepresent a whole group of people by my lack of knowledge. but I LOVE the idea and if people ever see my art and relate it to that, go for it!

this is getting long so i'll end it by saying he is just an idiot. A small short tiny dummy just like the rest of them!!!!! he drinks stupid juice too!!!!!!!! dont let his love of comically large knives fool you!!!!!

OH how neat it is to have a Sonic that is so hellbent on redemption due to the fact that there was one person he could not save (because he wasn’t allowed to) and doing everything in his power and mind to correct that “failure” to the point of ignoring his own personal boundaries and values and how neat it is that Shadow has gone so long without such simple pleasures of having someone seep into those stony walls built up on sandy foundations so he allows this if only to center him for just a little while, to remind him that he is someone, not something. 

and how delicious it is to have someone fall in unfortunate love while the other is already too taken with themselves and their stubborn ideals to notice (or maybe even to care,,,)

also the gag of it all being that they still act just as their usual selves the entire time, maybe with only glances of it shown to those who know them best--

I realllyyyy want to say how AMAZING it truly is to see so much Sonic hype nowadays. The Sonic franchise when I was growing up was just so bleak and tbh, hopeless. At least in my eyes. It would always suck when a new game would come out to negative response (rightfully so in many cases) or watching the 4kids dub destroy Sonic X and just be powerless to watch it all crumble. This fun franchise that got me into gaming in the first place, instead of just watching my cousins play. The franchise that got me into taking my art seriously and honing my skill. I remember being like 12 and writing about how once day I’m gonna go work for Sega just so I can make some good business decisions and actually make Sonic “good” again.

Now we got Sonic merch for days and for all ages, the kids are throwing Sonic themed birthday parties, I can finally go to a target or Walmart and get a Sonic and Friends toy if I want to instead of scouring online. I’m just really glad Sonic is getting his flowers and I’m gonna milk this while it lasts ok the little kid in me is just thriving rn 😭😭😭😭
