New blog!
I decided that my regular tumblr would just be derailed from my fandoms and silliness while I'm out on this trip so I made a new one.
Everyone who decided they wanted to be bored by me talking about my potential thesis work from my normal tumblr, twitter and all my on campus friends, hi! I hope you're enjoying your summer but there's no rest for the grad students.
For anyone new who finds this blog and has an interest in sonar mapping, hello! My name is Amy but you can call me Sonar Chick. Sorry I never put my full name online. I got stalked by a guy in high school over the net so... no.
I'm going to use this blog to write about my experiences as a grad student helping with sonar equipment (and analysis of the floor itself) for ocean floor mapping on the boat The Screaming Kettle, owned by my assistant professor, this guy named Avery. I'm a Marine Geology Major and I have two minors that are less important and would probably bore you. I'm also the only grad student on the boat with the necessary education to operate sonar equipment so yay for feeling important. :)
The other students? Nadine is our Marine Biology Major. She'll probably do some independent study on the boat and I think she might take on a regulatory role regarding how sonar affects the wildlife. At least, I think that was one of her thesis ideas, regulating sonar use to prevent bad ecological impact. We've had a few classes together in undergrad and we've hung out before. She's great. Very geeky.
Evan I don't really know. He's supposedly an anthropology major. Why Avery would take him out on this thing is a mystery if we're just mapping the ocean floor. I guess some people depart from their majors for thesis work? Sounds risky to me. Neither of us have ever had a class with him so I guess we'll have to get to know him with the crew.
There might be long delays in postings since I don't know if Avery has satellite internet for the boat. We'll see!
