Etcetera in Latin America: Evolution of a Greycat!

In brief: Etcetera in the 1991–1993 Latin American productions was a swing, and her design was Broadway/London queen called NBQ or Greycat. In the 2013 and 2018 Mexico revival, there's a very good reason why she kept that design...

1. NBQ/Greycat:

Greycat/ NBQ ('Nameless Brown Queen') was a swing character throughout the original London and Broadway runs. She usually looked something like a grey version of Cassandra: sleek, without arm or legwarmers, with minimal floofies but without Cassandra's close-cropped wig.

2. 1991 Mexico / 1993 Buenos Aires:

Along come the Latin American productions of the early 1990s, in which 'Etcetera' and 'Jemima' were used for the names of swing characters, with their designs based respectively on Greycat and AJ (='Almost Jemima', another London swing who looks like Jemima but with large asymmetrical white patches on her body).

Jemima has that very asymmetrical look of the AJ design, and, as you can see, Etcetera has the sleek airbrushed look of Greycat, with minimal floofies - but with a full wig, unlike Cassandra.

Now, AJ and Greycat vanished as swing designs with the end of the original Broadway and London runs. So no productions (to my knowledge) had any cats based on those designs, until...

3. 2013 Mexico revival...

...in which key members of the revival creative team had been involved in one or both of the original Latin American productions! (Also some of the cast, especially older cats like Deuteronomy, Jenny, and Jelly.)

Most notably for our purpose, 1991 Mexico Demeter (Lilia Sixtos) directed the revival, and the costume designer was the same woman in both cases: Marcela Valiente, who also played Etcetera in 1991.

So, yes. 1991 Etcetera is modelled on Greycat, and her actor based the 2013 design on that look. Here she is, played by Jabnia González:

4. 2018 Mexico tour:

But eventually she had a bit of an overhaul: for the 2018 tour, she acquired floofies, and arm and legwarmers! Also some more pink in her makeup.
