Here’s the thing, if you want to sit back, chill out and smoke a blunt while grooving to some tunes than this is the album for you. Sonia’s Son is Ish Williams Debut LP and is filled with mellow tracks and imaginative storytelling. It begins with Belly, a visual piece told through a raspy voice, where the lyrics create a picture. You can see the song play out as you watch his “Hispanic girl whippin tacos sipping Henny…watching belly**”.
Though it’s possible to consider an introductory project with 13 tracks to be a saturation of music, there are countless high quality tracks. The production is seamless, the flow unremitting. His mother’s voice provides an attractive transparency to the project through perspective, guidance and words of support.
‘Hoodrat Things’ is one of the tracks I very much appreciate with its captivating hook that gets your head bobbin’ along its carefree message. It’s a reminder that even in unpleasant situations you have to keep your head up and stay focused on the end game. Something ear catching about this particular track is the empathy you can hear in the artist’s voice. It’s something about raw emotion in music that strikes at the inner being. This same raw emotion can be found in my personal favorite ‘No Service’ where irritation and perhaps disappointment is felt throughout the song.
Through roads of various sentiments of frustration, sadness, appreciation, empathy and so forth we end up with a cohesive and personal project that is Sonia’s Son.
Ish Williams has officially gained a new fan.
