I HOPE THIS HURTS.
I'm completely convinced that Mephiles remains a popular villain among Sonic fans specifically because he's the kind of villain a kid on deviantart would come up with, but played completely straight without a hint of irony or shame.
No matter how stupid an idea may be, I think a lot of people just unconsciously appreciate and admire sincerity and when a story has complete faith in the characters and concepts it's presenting, even when the execution or even the general idea is a hot mess.
