"Vintage" for Synplant - 35 Unique Sound Presets by Lars Lentz
Sonic Charge Echobode review
In the world of plugins, Sonic Charge are a little out of the ordinary. You won’t find any run of the mill synths or uninspiring effects here. Sonic Charge plugins are different. I get the impression that Magnus Lidström and co make plugins for themselves and just happen to sell them. The result is some beautifully unique plugins tied together only by their shared quirky personality.
When some plugins go too far out of left field, they can become niche and in some cases, down right unusable to the average producer.
Luckily, Sonic Charge get the balance between being different and useful just right.
So far, they have produced Synplant (a synthesizer that “sprouts” sound), Microtonic (a characterful drum machine), Permut8 (an expansive bitcrusher) and Bitspeak (a resynthesis effect).
Now they’re releasing Echobode, a frequency shifting delay, as a VST and AU plugin.
Echobode has actually been around as a Reason Rack Extension for a while so making it available for other DAWs makes sense.
The interface is reminiscent of 1940s broadcast equipment and the art deco styled logo gives you an idea of where Sonic Charge got their inspiration. Echobode is laid out well and all the controls, which are pleasingly large, are immediately available. There are no hidden menus or fiddly parts to worry about here. The interface is simple and easy to use. Your eyes will straight away be directed towards the large Frequency Shifter knob. This is the key control around which the rest of the effect is centred.
Although a well presented interface it’s important, what really matters is how it sounds.
Echobode has it’s own character which I found to be very musical. I had to push the Frequency Shifter to quite extreme settings before it started sounding too harsh. It does this by cleverly surpressing parts of the sound (sidebands) that worker otherwise sound dissonant. The result is that Echobode manages to remain sounding musical, even while creating crazy effects. If you are looking for a much nastier sound, this surpression can be switched off.
With more gentle tweaking, I found it to be capable of some rather nice phasing and chorusing effects.
As stated before, the Frequency Shifter itself is nested within a delay’s feedback loop. If the delay’s Dry/Wet mix is set all the way to wet and the Delay Time is at it’s lowest setting (0.02ms) it is possible to use Echobode for pure realtime frequency shifting. If 0.02ms is still an unacceptable, this can easily be corrected within your host.
Should you wish to, phase distortion can be introduced to the shifted signal using the Phase knob.
Some of the crazier effects can be made when the frequency shifter is used within the delay.
The delay can be free run or tempo synced. One of Echobode’s more clever features is that even if you change tempo or tempo sync amount, the delay will not “jump” jarringly. Instead, it will transition smoothly – another way that Echobode remains sounding musical.
The delay can also be filtered using independent high and low-pass filters and there is also a Smear knob which “blurs” the sound, leading to reverb type effects.
Echobode has one LFO which can be routed to any of the following destinations: the frequency shifter, the phase distortion amount, the low-pass filter or the delay time (uniquely, not the amount). The controls which can be modulated are indicated by a black arrow to the left of the name. The arrow turns yellow when that particular control is being modulated.
The LFO has a Stereo switch which enables one channel to be inverted (down-to-up rather than up-to-down). This is great for making some really wide sounds.
I would like to see more modulation option in Echobode, especially LFOs. During the course of this review, I found that I often wanted to modulate more than one control at a time and so had to resort to automation. LFO phase controls would be nice as well. This shouldn’t be a deal breaker though as Echobode’s character is well worth the price.
Echobode is great for a range of applications, from subtle phasing and chorusing through to more radical metallic sounds. The unique compensation in both the frequency shifter and delay time to make it operate in a more musical manner is something unique to the device. It’s something well worth considering, even if you’re just looking for a delay. At $44, it’s very reasonably priced and there’s even a three week fully featured demo so there’s no excuse not to at least give it a go.
