I feel like you would have like Billy hatcher. It's a fun game and Billy Hatcher is a good character.

I never played it!

When I was a kid we rented this game out from the library...

Didn't have an Eye-Toy though, and when I realised we couldn't play it I cried so much that we had to go back and rent out this instead...

And that was probably the start of my love of Sonic.

Anyway, whenever I think of Billy Hatcher that's what I think of...

This ask came at the most perfect time though, cause last night I was playing Shinobi (2002), and I'm still in a PS2-era, Sega-ish sorta mood. I'll check it out, and if I remember to I might post something about it!

So what have you read of Sonic IDW and Archie comics?

This is a tough one. I'm not as organised with the comics as I am with the games...

IDW:

I'm not sure how accurate this is because the lists I found were based on chronology and not release order, but I've read everything above the red line. I read Scrapnik, and the Knuckles/Amy issues (which were #62-#64), but I don't remember the 900th adventure and that looks pretty standout. I could have sworn I was reading more relative stuff last summer though so the list format could just be messing me up. Definitely nothing past Summer 2025 though because I haven't read any IDW since then.

Archie:

I literally don't have a clue.

The quality of Archie is so all over the place that there was no way I was gonna read from issue 1 onward. I usually just go and read the stuff I hear about that sounds cool. Mecha Madness; Sonic X; The Super Genesis Wave; I skimmed some Knuckles stuff because of how insane it is; and a bunch of Ian Flynn things - like I read #269 because Silver Sonic was in it, as well as anything involving Shard.

Why is it all robot stuff..?

Yeah, characters like Mammoth Mogul really put me off so I'd skip their major stories. Same with Nate too. So it really is all over the place. I've seen a a few videos on the stuff I wasn't so keen on reading myself so I know the broad strokes.

I'm open to suggestions btw. If there are any characters or storylines you think I'd like reading then I'm all ears!

P.S. Fleetway's Sonic comic is worth checking out. It fizzles out in a disappointing way because of how it was cancelled but it's got some very high quality writing until that point. It's weird but cool - kind of what I was getting at a while back when I said I like it when Sonic's character is a little bit "off-model"

So what do you think would happen if Scourge was being ragebaited by Tails and Yuuta?

This is a really funny dynamic to me!

Here's how I see it (and I know this is not power-scale accurate at all):

It's like when you're 16 and you still haven't yet realised you're stronger than your parents, but your parents have.

They hassle Scourge; Scourge gets annoyed and curses them out; they run away all teehee.

Scourge knows full-well that if it came down to it they could kick his ass.

And they have absolutely no idea.

I think Soleil and Yuuta would get along great. Lunar would probably like Yuuta to but Lunar might try to rob him of the blade of courage.

[Spoilers for IDW Sonic (as of 2025)]

I am a little over a year out-of-date with IDW - I'm not supposed to know who that character is. I'm not even supposed to know Mimic is dead but I got spoiled by this stupid image

I'm not really much of a month-by-month or even a week-by-week sort of media enjoyer - I prefer to obsess like crazy in short bursts, and the last time I did that for IDW was early 2025

Do you think Yuuta is Cowardly? Someone told me he is but from what I have read he seems to have insecurities which isn't the same as being Cowardly. The same person also claims Yuuta doesn't have many flaws which i disagree with, we see him have a lot of flaws in chapter one.

I just wanna preface: I don't want anything I say to be used to insult or undermine anyone else's interpretations - I'm just some rando

The Flaws thing:

Yuuta's story is one of several "positive character arcs", and positive character arcs are fundamentally based on a character overcoming their own flaws.

To deny that Yuuta has flaws is to deny him the chance to overcome those flaws, and in turn, to deny him his whole character arc.

The cowardly thing:

I think, (and once again, just want to remind you of the preface) that this person just has a poor grasp of what cowardly means, and although they might be interpreting the character as intended just fine, they could just be failing to properly articulate it.

To be cowardly is to fail to act out of fear, and to be courageous is to act in spite of fear - they are opposites, and Yuuta being courageous is undeniable.

It sounds like they recognise that cowardly and courageous are directly opposed, but are conflating brave (acting WITHOUT fear) with courageous, and fearful (feeling fear irrespective of whether you act or not) with cowardly.

So no, I don't think Yuuta is cowardly, and imo, the manga does a lot to illustrate that Yuuta isn't cowardly. (I mean, even just consider issue 1 (or maybe it was #2) when Yuuta's bully shows up - Yuuta doesn't run, or cower, or even emote very strongly, he's just so like: "this idiot again 🙄")

Tbf to this person, although the terms cowardly, brave, and courageous are pretty ubiquitous in pop culture, I think the average person struggles with the nuances of these words. I know for many years, I personally misused brave and courageous interchangeably, but in retrospect, that's kinda like using hot and cold interchangeably because they both refer to temperature

What if Sonic, Tails, and Yuuta where raised together? How do you think it would affect the franchise and the story of the games?

I guess that depends on how you wanna tackle this.

Is this a hypothetical in which Sonic, as a franchise, was introduced with Yuuta and Tails from the start (like since the early 90s)

Or are we talking more alternative-continuity

Or a retcon of the existing continuity and continuing from there?

Regardless, it would certainly be an interesting take. Yuuta starts Blade of Courage under the false belief that he's uncourageous and slow - a belief that Sonic helps to shatter. But if they grew up together... idk - I doubt Sonic would ever let Yuuta get to that point in the first place. Then factoring in Tails as well...

If it was me (and this is purely just indulgence): Firstly, it's an alternate timeline (Blade of Courage still exists) Secondly, you know how in DBZ there's Future Trunks and regular Trunks, and future Trunks is very sweet and polite due to his upbringing, but regular Trunks is a cocky rich kid due to his upbringing? You might not like this, but I think doing something similar with Yuuta could be fun. Not necessarily making him an asshole or anything, but I think he would have a little bit more of an edge to him if he was raised alongside Sonic and Tails. Actually, thinking about it, his abilities come from courage, and courage is predicated on overcoming a fear, so him having less to overcome might, in-turn, make him initially weaker than the version of him that met Sonic later in life - could be something interesting to do with that.

Yenno I might think on this and get back to you - definitely interested in your take and what you think of my idea so far though
