SONIC 3: Lessons in Comedy (Tickle Fic)
“Tell me something…do you have any cheese at all?” asked the man on the TV. “Yes sir,” the store clerk replied. “Now I’m going to ask you that question once more. And if you say no, I’m going to shoot you through the head.” The audience roared with laughter. “Now…do you have any cheese at all?” “No.” BANG!!!
Maria Robotnik, lying on her stomach and propped up by a small pillow, nearly choked on those microwaved little wads of butter-flavored styrofoam that pretended to be popcorn. A kernel rocketed out of her lips and bonked against the screen, propelled on by a pack of mousy giggles. Shadow, next to her, was unmoved as usual.
“I don’t understand. Why didn’t he just go to a different cheese shop?” the moody hedgehog mumbled.
Smiling, Maria rolled her eyes to the ceiling and exhaled hard through her nose. This guy. “You need to learn how to laugh, Shadow. It's just silly…it’s funny. You know what funny is?”
Her rhetoric caught him off-guard. Shadow often worried that he didn’t connect to the emotions of these humans, though he kept that self-conscious thought inside. “I…I know what funny is. I can be funny,” he insisted.
“Oh yeah? You sure? Mr. Grumpy? Well why aren’t you laughing then?” Without thinking, Maria reached her left hand over and prodded Shadow’s waist, and both of them received quite the surprise when he jumped a foot in the air.
Shadow’s breath became heavy and he stared at Maria in a panic. He was dumbfounded…what was going on? Her touch had sent a tingling sensation all through his stomach…it wasn’t “pain,” precisely, but it distressed him in the same way. All the blood in his body frothed and bubbled like boiling tea. Was this a new form of earthling combat? Why did he feel an impulse to laugh?
“What was that?” he asked, visibly uncomfortable.
Maria had frozen, dumbfounded, just like him. She sucked her lips in between her teeth, making the turtle face that a girl always makes when she’s straining not to laugh at someone. It wasn’t working.
“Uh, that’s called ‘tickling,’” replied the cheeky human, her smile finally peeking out. Something about that grin crawling across her face made Shadow’s stomach sink. He could see the wheels turning in her head, and he didn’t like it. “What? You mean you’ve never been tickled before?"
Reaching over again, Maria directed her thumb and forefinger to a muscle on the hedgehog’s side and kneaded into it with rubbing, circular movements. A tiny zap of orange lightning ran through the quills on the back of Shadow’s head, and he reflexively hopped away, covering his waist with his hand.
“NNNahh!! C-cut that out...I don't like it,” he warned her. He looked confused, almost wounded.
"Well, too bad, 'cause IIII do.” Maria giggled at him in her most sing-songy voice and pinched him again………then she did it again. And again. And before he could stop her, she'd turned the alien over on his back and pinned him to the carpet.
“Ah!! G-Heh…Gggk…Dah!” The air painfully crawled out from deep in Shadow's abdomen. His muscles tightened. Every ounce of his strength was shoving back against the ball of laughter that bounced around in his guts, and he couldn’t move. "S…s-st-hop…Hehhh!"
"You are sooo ticklish and I am sooo gonna make you laugh." Maria was giddy, practically hopping with excitement. Her skittery, fast-crawling fingers kneaded and squeezed across Shadow’s torso like he was a ball of pizza dough, up and down and all around. He tried to back up, away from her, but there was no room. The people on the TV were laughing in the background…
“Ggg-EHH! Hnn…*puff* Huh! I’m t-telling y-hoo…NNG!!” Shadow was overcome. He felt sick. He was sweating. His energy was draining, replaced by agony and hurt. Never before had he faced such a dangerous assault (at least…he was pretty sure he hadn’t). No matter how he felt about Maria, he had to fight back and do it fast.
Acting on instinct, his hand shot forth and clawed at a space in between Maria’s ribs, and in a split second, the tables turned.
"AAAHHSHADOW!!" Maria screamed with delight and rolled over onto the floral blanket beneath them. The hedgehog’s quills pulsed with a nuclear glow, one that flashed brighter and fiercer than ever. He immediately straddled his friend’s waist, and his eyes were full of thunderbolts.
Shadow’s brain and fingers ran through his options faster than a GUN computer. Whatever Maria had done to him, he needed to replicate her actions in precisely the same way. This was all scientific; an experiment to be understood. So the trial went through phases, and he observed: if he shuffled all ten of his fingertips up and down against Maria’s tummy, she screamed and thrashed around until she melted into the blanket. If he scratched underneath her arms, she screamed even louder and snapped her triceps inward to crush his fingers (a futile gesture). And if he reached backwards and pinched her knees, that made her pop her eyes wide open and collapse into a violent giggle fit.
Results…conclusive. Weaknesses located.
“So this is…‘tickling,’” he hissed.
"AAAH Ha-Ha Ha! *gasp* Haha-Ha! STAAAHHHP!!" Maria's pleas, and her gleeful hysterics, all blurred together into an incomprehensible siren shriek. She kicked and twisted on the ground and pumped her arms like a jogger. Stringy blonde locks kept whipping into her mouth and forcing her to spit them out. “Eee! *pft* Ha-Ha Ha-Ha! *thbbppt!* Ohomyg-HAHAhawd AIEEHEE!! Don’t don’t HA!”
Static shocks ruptured from Shadow’s spine. He wasn’t stopping. He didn’t want to. (But why?) He clawed vigorously at Maria’s belly and in between her ribs and under her armpits with sharply-bent fingers faster and faster-and-faster-andfasterandfaste -
⚡️⚡️CHZZZT!!⚡️⚡️
A black and soundless void swallowed them whole. Light bulbs popped and sparks flew from their sockets, and suddenly, there was silence. The power was out.
The strange pair sat there, stunned, the spell on them immediately broken, when a loud alarm sounded, and a blood-red light crept under the gap in Maria’s door. The door’s electronic lock clicked open — standard emergency shutdown procedure. The entire hall outside was drenched in low-watt backup lights with a ghostly crimson glare, nuclear-powered for just such occasions, that spilled in onto the carpet like a stain.
“Whoa, shit,” Maria whispered at the gathering commotion. They could hear the chatter of panicked scientists and the whisk of flurried paper whirlwinds traveling into their room from every direction. Grabbing Shadow’s wrist, she hopped up, instructed him to “c’mon, c’mon!” and scampered with him toward the back corner. The two reached her bed, their go-to hiding spot, and quickly cowered underneath it just in time to watch a distinctive penguin-shaped silhouette waddle slowly into the doorway. With a mustache.
(The silhouette, not the doorway.)
"Shadowwwwww? Mariaaaaa? Are you in here? Is everything alright?" its stern voice rumbled.
The apparition hovered in the entry for a moment before it was satisfied with the children’s absence, then it turned away and shuffled down the hall, back into the dust as if it had never been. The alien hedgehog and the human girl still detected the cacophony outside, but they were alone once more.
“Oh my gosh Shadow…” Maria snickered under her breath. She covered her mouth with both hands, to muffle the noise and to stop herself from giggling. “I can’t believe you blew the power out!”
In the darkness, she couldn’t see her best friend’s cheeks heating up. Shadow sighed, equally befuddled and embarrassed. He still didn't comprehend it. If this "tickling" behavior upset him, and Maria had recognized that, then why did she do it in the first place? Did she not like him? Why didn't she stop when he asked her to? Was this something that normal humans did? Was he in the wrong, for not sharing in her jubilation? Eh...the moment passed; he could fret over those messy implications later. The important thing at present was to stay out of trouble.
Though for some primordial reason he couldn't explain, he wondered what would happen if Maria were to laugh suddenly…say, right now, this very moment…and blow their cover.
He wondered how she would respond if he were to surprise her…if getting caught was worth it, just to see her excited cheek-aching grin again. Watching her wiggle and scream with laughter had stirred strange feelings in him that he assumed must be “happy”…oh, and what if he tickled her in a different spot? What would happen then?
…
…..Perhaps he understood her urges after all.

This was planned to be part of my Sega Snickers drabble collection, but I decided to separate it since this was the only fic based on a live-action adaptation instead of the actual video game lore.
Most of the time, I have difficulty writing tk content about canonically-dead characters - especially the really tragic ones. There’s just a mental wall there. I can’t reconcile the giddiness of tickling with those negative emotions. But the whole idea of these two bugging each other was too cute to resist.
That's right, I'm hopping onto the trend of tickling a specific character with reblogs and likes. I picked Infinite the Jackal as the fluffy, adorable lee. The first character as the ler is gonna be revealed with 5 likes and 10 reblogs/reposts. Can we do it, Sonic tickle community? Edit: You may reblog this more than once!
Just saw Sonic 3…
It has now inspired potential Ark Siblings TK Content.
