Sound & Spaces with Peter Cusack, Jean-Paul Thibaud & Aki Pasoulas Photos by Blanca Regina and Pierre Bouvier Patron Via Flickr: Sonic Waterloo presented Sound & Spaces with Peter Cusack, Jean-Paul Thibaud & Aki Pasoulas The talk will look at the subjects of sound and environment, followed by solo performances by Cusack and Pasoulas. Performances at IKLECTIK on the 6th of July 2017with Aki Pasoulas/Blanca Regina & Peter Cusack Jean-Paul Thibaud is a sociologist and Senior Researcher at CNRS (France). He is a researcher at CRESSON research laboratory (Research Center on Sonic Space and the Urban Environment / UMR1563 AAU). His field of research covers the theory of urban ambiances, ordinary perception in urban environment, anthropology of sound, sensory culture and ethnography of public places, in situ qualitative methodology. Jean-Paul Thibaud has published numerous papers on ur- ban ambiances and sensory atmospheres, and has recently published a book entitled En quête d'ambiances. Eprouver la ville en passant (Geneva: MétisPresses, 2015). Aki Pasoulas is a composer and a Lecturer in Music and Audio Arts at the University of Kent. His research interests include acousmatic music, time and timescale perception in relation to music, psychoacoustics and sound perception, spatial sound, acoustic communication, and soundscape ecology especially in relation to listening psychology. He has written for instruments, found objects, voice, recorded and electronic sound, composed music for the theatre and for short films, and organised and performed with many en- sembles. Photos by Blanca Regina and Pierre Bouvier Patron Via Flickr: The Body as Musical Instrument a lecture by Atau Tanaka for Sonic Waterloo The lecture/performance considers the human body as musical instrument. To do so, we look at the use of physiological signals, notably the electromyogram, as a way to capture the gestural intention and effort of the performer. The use of biomedical technologies as computer interfaces, however, do not automatically comprise a musical instrument. To imagine a system that affords ex- pressive musical performance, we will think about the notion of the “instrument”, and contrast it with concepts of the “tool” predominant in our tech- noculture. We will also consider the word, “per- formance” and its various artistic, technical, and social meanings. Through this extended vision of musical instruments, we will consider how biosig- nals provide a virtual instrument, or perhaps even turn performer into instrument. Atau Tanaka studied electronic music with Ivan Tcherepnin at Harvard University where he met John Cage during his Norton Lectures. He did his doctorate with John Chowning at Stanford University’s CCRMA. There he began working with electromyogram muscle signals as a musical interface, using the BioMuse. He has conducted research at IRCAM, formed Sensorband with Zbigniew Karkowski and Edwin van der Heide and then worked in Japan, performing with Merzbow, Otomo, and KK Null and others. He has since been researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratory Paris and Artistic Co-Director of STEIM. He is Professor of Media Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. At Sonic Waterloo with Gino Robair, Steph Horak and Steve Beresford Photos  by Blanca Regina and Pierre Bouvier Patron Via Flickr: Performances at Sonic Waterloo with Gino Robair, Steph Horak and Steve Beresford playing first a trio then a solo each and another trio at Iklectik on the 5th of July 2017. Steph Horak is a sound and video artist, mainly focussed on systems for voice. Stylistically, her sound edges some- where between experimental electronica, songwriting and conceptual art. These experiments can be found under the moniker SheIsRevolting. She has collaborated on releases for Mute Records and Fractal Meat Cuts. Her video work frames mundane experiences into hypnotic, endless dream sequences, and she has a great interest in exploiting the lim- itations of technologies, such as iPhone cameras or effects pedals for voice. Horak is a producer for arts organisations, universities, charities, and independent artists. Steve Beresford has been a central figure in the British improvising scene for over thirty years, working with the likes of Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Christian Marclay and Alterations. He has an extensive discography as performer, arranger, composer and producer, and was was awarded a Paul Hamlyn award for composers in 2012. Gino Robair has performed and recorded with Tom Waits, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Nina Hagen, Terry Riley, Lou Harrison, John Butcher, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Otomo Yoshihide, and the ROVA Saxophone Quartet. He is one of the “25 innovative percussionists” included in the book Per- cussion Profiles (SoundWorld, 2001), as well as a founding member of the Splatter Trio and Pink Mountain.
