Altered States: Red Sonja #1 Review

Now this is how you do a modern-day Red Sonja story, although admittingly it's transformed into a fantasy setting halfway through thanks to a spell.

The modern Sonja is instantly likable and takes to the transformation quicker than expected. This issue really reminds me of some of the modern-day episodes of Xena, which treats the titular character like their a historical figure, although this is played far more seriously than those episodes (not that there's no humor at all, but still). The artwork by Juanan Ramirez does a great job of differentiating the fantasy elements and the modern-day setting, while keeping things fresh and energetic. I do love how they used the lettering in this book, to have a dueling conversation between the two Sonja's as the modern-day one is freaking out. I had a lot of fun with this, and I wonder why Dynamite hasn't done this Altered States concept more often.
