Hello ;u; ! about the Coco post, the part where Jorge pitched his idea to Pixar and Disney is fake D8 they don't allowed external pitches, he went to Dreamworks instead and sadly got rejected. And yes, the director is white but the writer and co director of the movie is Adrian Molina, a mexican. Also Jorge and Del Toro support this movie and as a mexican Im very excited too! so please please consider this information when talking about Coco ;u;9 thank you so so much

Thanks for the information!  I did know for a fact that Dreamworks rejected him, but I figured throughout 14 years of pitching, he had to go to a Disney branch of some kind.  I may be wrong!  And don’t worry, I know a lot of groups are saying that Disney directly stole Jorge’s potential pitch for themselves, I don’t necessarily believe that.  I just figured that within all that time, Jorge may have had connections at Disney or an agent that could have contacted them, and had been turned down period.  Like I said, I may be wrong, so I’m sorry if I posted incorrect information!

While I am Hispanic, I am not Mexican, so I definitely cannot speak for anyone else in regards on whether this film is well-done from a cultural standpoint!  I think the thing that just makes me saddest is that whether Coco is a cinematic miracle or a total dud, it’s still going to get more attention than The Book of Life–a movie I quite enjoyed and feel very passionate about in regards to the work that went into it!  I don’t doubt that Coco has a lot of work put into it too, it just makes me a little sad that Disney/Pixar will most likely completely overshadow the hard work of a smaller company just because…well…they’re Disney/Pixar.

Don’t get me wrong–no one is the enemy here (unless someone did actually steal someone else’s work directly, but I’m pretty sure/really hoping that’s not the case)!  And I am super happy that there is more representation out there for Dia de los Muertos!  I’m just nervous about it being potentially commercialized, y’know?  I’m glad that Disney has learned from their mistakes since the days of trying to trademark the holiday’s name, I’m just hoping that the film’s message is more important than the sales of toys or merch or anything else.  I think I reblogged a post mentioning earlier that it would be wonky if people started crediting sugar skulls as a “Coco” thing rather than an actual cultural thing, and I think that’s a pretty valid point.

ALL OF THIS SAID THOUGH, no matter anyone’s stance on the movie, we’ve only seen one trailer.  This thing doesn’t come out until November.  It may be amazing, it may stink, but even though I’m a bit uneasy about the whole controversy that’s arising, I still want to give it a chance.  I’ll admit that I have my biases because of all that has gone on with The Book of Life, but like I mentioned, I certainly can’t speak for everyone!  Especially for Jorge (who I admire and respect a LOT) who seems in support of the film.  Like, that’s really darn neat.

I am SO sorry this is so long, and I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m contradicting myself!  In a nutshell, I personally feel skeptical about the production process of Coco, but that doesn’t mean I want to condemn it.  I just want people to know that The Book of Life is still out there and that it took a lot of work to come together, and I still hope it can hold its own after all is said and done. 

Heart and soul was put into Coco.  Heart and soul was put into The Book of Life.  There are people who worked on both films who care about it very much, and I’m incredibly thankful that representation for Dia de los Muertos isn’t limited to just one film. 

I’m just praying that both films will be celebrated on an equal level in the future.

Belated hurricane update

As I mentioned before, everything and everyone is fine.

My parents lost power for a couple days, but they were able to power the important things like the fridge/freezer with a generator. I’ve been back at my apartment in Orlando for the past week and classes are resuming tomorrow. 

I think that’s about it.

I'm riding out the hurricane at my parents' house which is more out of the way of the storm than my apartment. It looks like we're as prepared as we're going to be. Irma should be hitting us overnight tomorrow.

I’m also battling a bad case of con crud. Blegh
