After dinner, curled up on the sofa to cuddle, Qiaomeng deems it the right moment to finally broach the subject he’d been skirting around. Hiroki is right -- they have to talk about the elephant in the room, whether or not he wants to. Kiryu deserves as much. “I know this is a li’l outta nowhere, but.. “
He clears his throat, grabbing the remote to turn the TV’s volume down to a gentle background noise. “We gotta talk. About this. About... us.” He puts the remote away to brush Kiryu’s bangs from his forehead. Despite the rabbit-speed of his heart, his hand is steady.

This must be the place. According to Ivy’s instructions, anyhow. From the outside, it looks like any other bookstore, nothing out of the ordinary. But there’s a pleasant buzz radiating off of it, enough to make Vincent’s earring tingle. How come he’s never been here before?
A hum in his throat, he pushes the door open. The bell above it tinkles pleasantly. It’s heaven inside, books upon books upon books. He may just come back another day, when he isn’t playing errand boy for a friend. Now, however, it’s strictly business. A displeased Ivy is a mopey Ivy, and he doesn’t need that in his life. “Excuse me,” he calls out, unfolding the list of books he’s been entrusted with. Here’s to see how much luck he has.

It’s not like him to argue. Not with his friends, at least. Qiaomeng picks them carefully for that reason -- people with the same mindset, the same opinion. Arguing drains him. Doesn’t lead anywhere. Someone as opinionated and stubborn as he gains nothing from going into hour-long debates. Most of the time, his strategy works. Standing in front of Hiroki’s bookstore, he exhales a sigh. It’s not cold enough anymore for his breath to come out white, temperatures mercifully mild these days. Still, no amount of sunshine breaks through the dark looming over him. It wasn’t right to talk to Hiroki the way he did. He meant well, always does. How was he supposed to know to tread lightly?
Qiaomeng pushes the door open. He’ll apologize before doing anything else. The tiny bell above chimes happily, signaling his arrival. Save for him and the plethora of books stacked in neat rows across every wall, the shop’s entrance area is empty. Small mercies. “Hiro?” he calls out, scanning the back of the store over the counter. “I’m here t’pick up my -- Kiryu.”

He’s here on duty, but he might as well have a good time. As good a time as someone tasked to hunt down whatever scared a bunch of young women a couple of days ago can have. Rory downs another shot. It burns his throat in its wake, a welcome sensation. “Some say the glass is half empty. Some say the glass is half full.” He gestures for a refill. “I say, does it really matter either way? This is like my eighth glass of the night.”
