One good turn... All Blacks star given new medal after World Cup gesture
Sonny Bill Williams has been presented with a second World Cup winner's medal after giving his original one away to a teenager during the lap of honour around Twickenham following New Zealand's win over Australia. The New Zealand centre was unaware he would be presented with a replacement medal from All Blacks captain Richie McCaw at the World Rugby awards ceremony in London last night. "I'm really surprised, most of the boys would have done the same," Williams said as he received his second medal to a standing ovation.
Is he regretting he lost his medal? I don't know. But it was a lovely, lovely touch.
World Rugby chief executive Brett Gosper
Williams made the gesture after 15-year-old Charlie Lines was tackled to the ground by a security guard for jumping over the hoardings and entering the field at Twickenham on Saturday. Williams then escorted the teenager back to the stands before taking the medal from around his neck and placing it over his head. The boy then kissed the medal and gave Williams a hug. "One gesture of generosity deserves another," World Rugby said in a tweet.
