❛  concentrate .  ❜  laurie muttered as she tapped her pen against the page of her notebook .  ❛  come on , what’s the  monroe  doctrine  ?  ❜  she asked , looking towards him with raised brows as she waited  . chin resting in her hand as she did , small , amused smile on her lips .  that  usual  challenging  look  remained  in  her  eyes  . studying with the other didn’t happen very often , usually when a quiz came up - or something of that sort . when andy needed those few notes from the classes he had skipped . 

she grabbed a little flash card , pen a laying a cursive rendition of  ‘ monroe doctrine ’ on one side before she flipped it to write the answer on the other . all neat and ready to be highlighted . laurie wasn’t one for  skipping  details  , figured they were just as important as the basics . she still highlighted the key words , those pieces of jargon that could remind her of the further facts when needed .  ❛  began in 1823 ...  ❜

𝙸𝚃   𝚆𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳   𝙷𝙰𝚅𝙴   𝚃𝙰𝙺𝙴𝙽   𝚃𝚆𝙾   𝙼𝙸𝙽𝚄𝚃𝙴𝚂  ,      he   would   of   had   to   endure   a   mildly   uncomfortable   conversation   before   moving   on  .      oh   ,   how   he   dreamed   for   the   simple   mild   discomfort   of   sharing   too   much   of   anything   with   his   father   ,   back   in   a   world   where   his   words   didn’t   carry   as   much   weight   ,   where   the   wrong   phrasing   or   white   lie   didn’t   carry   the   key   to   his   future   jail   cell .      awkward   hands   flex   at   his   side    ,    knuckles   white   before   he   extends   his   fingers   .   repeating   motion   comforted   the   loud   ,   chaotic   stress   that   ricocheted   around   his   ribs  .       ❝  i   didn’t   think   you   could   help .  ❞       it   was   the   truth    ,    or   what   he   told   himself   enough   for   it   to   be   his   truth .

andy   barber   used   to   be   superman   to   the   young   teenager   ,   man   able   to   do   anything    -    𝙩𝙝𝙚   𝙤𝙣𝙚   𝙟𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙗   𝙧𝙖𝙣   𝙩𝙤   𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚   𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 .     now   ,   that   same   little   boy   ,   stands   almost   as   tall   as   his   father    ,    accused   of   murder   &    retreating   further   into   his   shell   as   time   went   on   .       ❝  i   don’t   know   .    i   guess   i   just    [    .  .  .    ]   got   scared  .   i   wanted   to   get   out   of   there  .   ❞          gaze   avoids   the   other’s   ,    fidgeting   hands   now   pushed   into   his   pockets   .      ❝ i’m   sorry .  ❞
