GRMLN's Soon Away is the kind of record that makes me feel like nobody over the age of 22 should be allowed to waste their time making music. The songs buzz with energy and confusion, as frontman Yoodoo Park blends a sunny California vibe with an underlying alienation. Yoodoo Park was born in Japan, and spends time there every summer, which gives a vastness to these mostly minimalist songs. An outsider who doesn’t feel entirely at home on either continent searching for clarity and a place to belong, Park has turned to punk rock to build an empire of his own.
