The Hunger Games play on the screen as a redhaired girl named Annie Cresta screams and cries. The camera zooms in on her face and the announcers babble on about how she’s likely next. Tactus spreads his legs on the pool chair and shrugs his shoulders. An Avox delivers him an orange drink with sugar on its rim, a little plastic umbrella swishing between crushed ice.
Tactus thinks the drink in his hand reminds him of his girl. Or maybe the other way around. It doesn’t really matter. The drink is worth more than her, in the end. Tastes better too, he thinks. She probably tastes like salt and fish and smells of dirt.
Finnick lays next to him by the pool, despondent and ashen as his eyes glue to the screen. He is trying not to shake. It isn’t hard to work out that he knows the girl. Tactus lifts the victor’s hand and kisses it, showing off his prize to the others. Finnick still never responds. Likely choking on his own heart.Tactus smiles and takes another sip.
