When Austin was barely five years old, his world was turned upside down. Late one night the police invaded his home only to find that the basement of his house was in reality a meth lab and had been since long before he was born. He has vague memories of being pulled away from his parents and the blur that followed and ended with him in foster care. With his first placement, he called his foster parents Mom and Dad, and let himself trust and believe that maybe he could be a part of their family. But it didn’t work out. He was always clingy, yet couldn’t seem to behave. Attachment disorder, the social worker called it, but his foster parents found it, and him, grating.
By his fifth home, Austin had lost some of the light in his eyes - and he was anything but clingy. He’d always been a kindhearted boy, but the more time that passed, the more he couldn’t help feeling increasingly bitter towards his parents for ruining their lives and his all at once. As he got close to aging out of the system, Austin had become the type of person who felt lost no matter where he was. He took to spending most of his time at a local park alone. He didn’t look for trouble; he was just liked being outside.
Though his years in the system, lost and abandoned constantly, he found solace in humor and sarcasm. So much so, he didn’t always know how to turn it off. He’d make jokes what would make everyone laugh, or make inappropriate ones that caused people to shy away from him. By that time he had gotten so used to people leaving him that he’d be damned if he’d let anyone else notice it hurt him. He would never let anyone see the pain he was carrying.
Internally, he desperately wants acceptance. He desperately needs someone to want him and pay attention to him and becomes a bit of an attention seeker in the process - even if the attention is negative. Even if a foster parent was yelling at him or disciplining him - they were focused for those few minutes and Austin would do whatever he could to keep it. This often caused him to make poor decisions that ended up getting into some pretty dark places.
Still, in the end, that was what drew the attention of the one of the Island’s kidnapping teams. They consider loners easy prey, as are foster children. Austin was both. Deep down, Austin still believes that he’ll find someone to be his family - someday.
