Sophie loved the design of the courtyard, the strong contrast of the black and white stones formed in geometric precision while the gilded palace loomed behind. It was a stunning reminder of what France had been before the revolution and what many hoped it would become again. Still, there was change in the air as former duchies became kingdoms and countries were formed. While she pondered the implications, she noticed a blonde woman in front of her and decided to make new acquaintances; after all, was it not her job as Sultana to strengthen alliances or make new ones. "Is this not such a unique design for a palace? I find something new wherever I go," she remarked to the young woman. "Pardon, I should have introduced myself. I am Sophie Osman, Sultana of the Ottoman Empire."

Setting: The Hall of Mirrors, morning

Light poured through the windows of the Hall of Mirrors, reflecting off the crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and sending rainbows dancing all over the hall. Though Sophie would always have a love of her castles back in her former home, Versailles was easily the most elegant and dazzling palace that Sophie had ever been and the Hall of Mirrors was the epitome of that glamour. Sophie loved walking in the hall, looking at the statues, the art, and of course the vision of herself in the mirrors. She had stopped to adjust herself when she caught sight of another person in the hall. "I must look decidedly vain, just staring at myself in the mirror. I swear I wasn't just watching myself, I was adjusting my dress. I do love the mirrors though. I am seriously considering having them installed in the palace when I get to Istanbul." Sophie chuckled at the princess.

Sophie brought a cup of lemonade up to her lips, enjoying the feeling of the bubbling water and the refreshing taste of the lemon as it met her lips; many seemed upset by summer's heat, but Sophie basked in the feeling of warmth on her skin. The winter and spring were officially behind them and Sophie would enjoy the return of light summer dresses and a few less layers. She had settled herself outside to enjoy the day and also peruse the eye candy. She was married after all, not dead. She had been enjoying the sights when Valencia walked past and Sophie called out, her voice carrying over the din of the occupied gardens. She smiled at the sight of her friend and motioned to her glass, an offer; it had been far too long since they'd spoken.

Where: Sophie's quarters

Steam rises from water so hot it is nearly scalding; Sophie had asked that it be hot and when her flesh screamed at the burning, she'd merely hissed and sank into the water. The burn was almost a comfort, a distraction from pain elsewhere; the water moved against her, lapping away Hapsburg blood, baptizing her anew as Sophie Osman, the Sultana of the Ottoman Empire and hero of Versailles. By the time she rose from the bath, it had cooled and she looked clean other than the unsightly burn on her arm. Her ladies had left her a cream to put on it before they'd been unceremoniously ousted from the room and she slathered it on the unsightly mark, a little reminder of the hell she'd been through, and then wrapped it up and threw on her robe. She tied it shut and began to brush her hair, walking into her chambers only to find a guest already there, Mustafa.

It was unlike the Sultan to visit Sophie and the two had spent nearly the whole time in France looking to their own devices. Sophie expected that Mustafa probably had a whole series of women that he saw in the meantime, but he had not visited her bed since they'd arrived; she was not sure that she had minded the arrangement. But now, she'd done something that had set tongues to wagging; she supposed that she should have forseen their meeting, but she had not expected it that night, not when she was so raw. "Mustafa, I'm surprised you found the room. You have spent our entire journey as far away from me as possible. I just assumed that you had never figured out where I was staying." She looked at him coolly and folded her arms across her body, careful to not press on her wound.

Where: Defne's sitting room, day after the events

Sophie had slept little in the preceding night, as had most of the palace she suspected. She had not wanted to be alone and had spent the night out and about before returning in the early hours of the morning and passing out. When she had woken, a harsh sunlight had been poking through her window. Her mouth felt like cotton, her head pounded, and her arm throbbed under its bandages. Still, she needed to make her calls, first among them, her eldest sister-in-law. She called for her ladies, asking for their help in dressing in a long blue gown which covered her bandaged arm and then was gone. The guards let her in immediately, their faces showing a trace of awe and even discomfort at being in her presence.

"Defne? How are you? I just wanted to make sure that you, Rhysand, Edward, and the baby were all doing well despite everything. I was hoping you'd want to get some breakfast."

Where: Sophie's sitting room

The moon had risen over Versailles, bathing the palace in a cold, sterile white light; even so, the palace bustled with caretakers running from wounded to wounded. There was no peace to be had that night, not that Sophie thought she particularly sought it. In fact, she had found herself in her quarters where her ladies had drawn her a bath to try and get mud, ash, and blood off her. The water had hurt like hell, but it was the silence after her ladies had dressed her for bed and left that seemed to choke her the most. She had eventually wrapped a robe around her and sent a note.

"Drinking a particularly nice bottle of Medeira...care to help me polish it off? -S. Osman"

Then, she waited.

A knock sounds at her door and Sophie almost yells at the person to leave her alone, not that such an outburst is very comely of a sultana. Still, the past hours had been a tumultuous wreck for Sophie. She had started high, enjoying the party with its food, drinks, and socializing. She had basked in the way others had looked at her when she made her way in, adorned in gold and red, the colors of her empire. She had been striking, bold, and then, in moments, her light had been stolen once again by her family. Then, the awe had turned to suspicion as she became a suspect in her family's disappearance. The hours after the knowledge became public had been a whirlwind of panic and consulting advisors before Sophie settled that she must help find her family, if only to put her own reputation to rights. After that, she had allowed herself time to sulk a bit, and drink. She was in the midst of that sulking when the visitor had knocked.

"Come in, but I will apologize at the fore, I was not expecting company." Her expression changed completely, however, when she realized her visitor was Aylin. "Aylin! Oh my goodness. I was not expecting you. Are you hungry? I'm sorry, I am tipsy as can be."

"Hey there stranger," Sophie texted the crown prince of Switzerland while watching him speak with one of his brothers. She had to play it coy in front of people, making the ever-innocuous remarks about how she was focused on business, that Mustafa had things to attend to back home, and that she would enjoy times with friends while in front of the press. She knew that they all clamored for the sight of her husband, not that he often came to things he was not hosting. Still, even with her protestations, the media suspected the truth: Sophie was very much alone when it came to her marriage. With Mustafa not present, but very watchful, she had found her own methods of entertainment. One of her favorite was Emir Merian; he was clever, handsome, and a bit wounded...also he was taken, which made their dalliance all the more fun. "Want to step out for a bit? I'll meet you in the third hall on the right, outside of the ballroom in 10." The text sent, she grabbed another drink and headed on her way.
