zosia being assigned to carol reminds me of when sophon took on a human appearance in cixin liu’s ‘death’s end.’ it’s less appeasing these humans, and more getting them comfortable with the idea of an Other being around. still love zosia, but the hivemind was slick for that. too bad their primary opposition isn’t a chud but instead a mentally unsound alcoholic lesbian whose wife they killed 😂

Detailed summary:

This is a somewhat canon-divergent reimagining of the scene where the ship "Judgement Day" and all its crew and passengers is being sliced by the "zither", a set of near-invisible nanomaterial strings that are strung across the Panama canal. The nanoscientist Wang Miao, whose research lab has manufactured the deadly strings, is forced to watch the ship being destroyed. He is very upset by the sight. The two sophons are watching from Earth's orbit. One of them secretly sympathizes with the people of Earth and does not want their destruction. It has to keep these sympathies secret from the other sophon and from the Trisolaran government, while it struggles to find a way to relieve Wang Miao's distress.

JOMP book photo challenge 6 October: Favourite Villain

Sophon from Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy is one of my favourites from recent memory. Originally, Sophon begins life in the trilogy as a subatomic particle responsible for spying on the Earth for the Trisolarans and hindering any technological developments humans might make. Cool so far? The Trisolarans decide that humans may be more accepting of this invasion of privacy if they turn Sophon into an anthropomorphic robot that looks like a beautiful Japanese woman who’s really into tea. Don’t piss her off though, she’s deadly with a sword!
