He's seeing the impossible; deep inside of himself there's a cold analysis, a dispassionate, factual certainty: that is a mortal wound. The Empress of the Isles is dying, she will die.
Long has he been silent, not merely quiet. Even his glances and tics have been...tamed. Brought to heel lest his lack of restraint cause more damage than it's worth, to the Empress' credibility in court. Never mind that the members of Parliament engage in juvenile histrionics at the drop of a hat; a single raised brow on his own darker-skinned countenance outbalances even the most childish of rows between nobles.
Thus he has held his tongue, initially until privacy presented itself, such as it was, then, clenched between his teeth; the trip with Geoff, whilst unfruitful and...disappointing, in the barest of terms, was freeing. It felt like a shadow of his past, a time on the waves with those considered equals, or at least something nearer to it.
At the approach along the Wrenhaven, he'd felt himself stiffening. His stance, his hands, his face, until his tongue, too, was once again stone in his mouth by the time they'd reached the water lock.
Now, however, he sees her on the cold marble, impossible red flowing from under her already-soaked jacket, her skin paling as he watches, as his knees hit the ground and he crawls to her gracelessly, Emily's screams still in his ears.
Now she lay in his useless hands, and his lips crack open, his throat works as he chokes on his own breath and tears. At last, Corvo Attano finds his voice.
"Jess," he gasps, a broken, hoarse sound. "Please."
Please don't leave me.
It's the most selfish of thoughts. Emily is in the wind—she was right there and now she isn't, and Jessamine's killers have taken her and Jess herself is here, heavy in his hands, still warm—
"Don't go," he rasps.
Jessamine Kaldwin, First of Her Name, manages to open her eyes and focus on his own. It appears to be the smallest of movements and the most monumental of efforts.
Corvo," she gasps, in what is clearly her final breath. "God forbid—women do anything."
people staring lovingly at johnny knoxville!
feeling very jess mariano today
wrote scribbled in the margins, wished i was in new york, hated on the american public school system, wore a denim jacket, contemplated running away to California and came very close to punching people (did it mentally)
when you get a giant squishmellow for your girl but then your cat claims it as his own
when you farted but there's no wyatt in the room to blame 😬
Fav thing about Jess?
(( OOC: There’s not a lot that I don’t love about Jess. I’d give her a solid 8… maybe a 9.5… there’s always room for improvement.
Jokes aside, my “favorite” thing is the fact that Jess is an incredibly compassionate person, however much she pretends not to be. ;) She’s experienced a lot in her life, and has developed a maturity and wisdom well beyond her years. She’s thoughtful, affectionate, supportive/encouraging, talented, creative, unwaveringly honest and entirely herself, and she makes me feel safe, loved and secure when life becomes unstable. I’m endlessly grateful that she came into my life.
… That and she’s incapable of taking a compliment without a sarcastic retort and that’s just incredibly Remus of her. @sirussly ))
