caleb, leaning on the headboard of his bed, has one arm around your waist and the other propped up to keep his hand on your head. your back rests on his chest, the warmth of your body spread over him like a weighted blanket.
"would you rather be a cat or a dog?" you ask through sleepy lips.
caleb chuckles. "a dog," he says as if he has thought long and hard about this question many times over.
you lean your head back, blinking at him sluggishly. "why a dog?"
"weeellll," he starts, "people don't usually go out with their cats, right?" he continues in a quiet hum, "i can at least go outside with you for walks if i'm a dog. it would be more fun, i think."
he runs his fingers through your hair, fingertips gently brushing against your scalp. it's a physical lullaby. you feel yourself slipping closer towards sleep despite just waking up.
"i never said you'd be my dog," you mumble.
"if i'm not yours, then who would i belong to?"
you can't really process his question in your current sleepy state, so you don't answer. he doesn't seem to mind at all.
but after a beat of silence, he pulls you closer.
"would you rather be a goat or a matter baby?" he asks.
"hmm…?" you're not sure you heard him correctly.
"what the heck… is a matter baby…?" you ask with the last bit of energy you manage to squeeze out.
"nothing," he laughs a little too loud, "what's a matter with you, baby?"
you groan behind closed lips while his laughter rumbles in his chest, each beat making you bounce slightly. he hugs you tighter and nuzzles into your hair before pressing a kiss to the top of your head. you decide to save your complaints for later, instead allowing yourself to fall into a deep sleep that will most definitely ruin your sleep schedule…
