The Middle Finger
I was 18 years old and working as a seasonal employee for the city I grew up in. I did a lot of things during the summer of 1999 that would become city worker folk lore. I drove the city truck over a large drinking fountain and flipped the bird to my boss in the break room. The drinking fountain destruction was genuinely an accident, but the bird to my boss was not.
I reflected on the middle finger incident the other day. It wasn't very lady like or respectful to give my boss the finger. In my defense, I was mostly doing it to be silly. I remember there was some friendly banter going on and then I decided to flip the bird to take the banter one step further. I didn't realize the pavement had ended and I stepped off a cliff with my "one step further" bit.
He was mad.
He let everyone else leave early that day and I had to stay and clean out some disgusting waste water sewage tank. I kept apologizing telling him that I was just kidding. He wasn't buying it.
Sorry Todd. I really only meant it as a joke.
