Cartier | The Allan Tiara (aka The ‘Lusitania’ Tiara) | c. 1909 ・・・ The Allan Tiara is arguably the most famous (or infamous) of tiaras. Sir Montagu Allan commissioned the tiara for his wife, Marguerite, in 1909. It features classic Greek key in circular diamonds topped with a row of perfect seed pearls. The center diamond is detachable. In 1915 Lady Allan and her two teenaged daughters were heading to Europe from Canada to help with the war effort when their ship, the Lusitania, was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland. The ship sank in 18 minutes and 1,198 of 2000 passengers perished. Among the fatalities were Marguerite’s daughters. Though she was severely injured, Lady Allan survived the sinking of the Lusitania. Her two maids survived the shipwreck as well. Unbelievably, one of them also managed to save Lady Allan's Cartier tiara, concealing it in her clothes throughout the ordeal. The tiara stayed in the Allan family until 2015.
