Sound-Dust, Stereolab (2001)
Compared to the long forms of Cobra Phases, there’s something far more immediately appealing about Sound-Dust, Stereolab’s last record with Mary Hansen. It’s brimming with little jazz-pop revelations, within songs that are more mobile than those on many of their albums before it. There are less modular synths and even more brass, a return to something more whimsical and swooning rather than sheerly dense. Smooth and direct, Sound-Dust isn’t an important or essential Stereolab release but, listened to enough times, it undeniably reveals a lot of the same enchanting otherworldliness one naturally associates with the band and is a worthwhile listen for anyone already besotted with their more famed works.
