STEREOLAB // CONTRONATURA [DOTS AND LOOPS, 1997]
Copy of the September 1994 edition of “The Lab Report,” the long-running newsletter from UK band Stereolab.
Written, as always, by Stereolab manager Martin Pike, this copy of Stereolab’s newsletter dates from September 1994. Back then such things were done via postal mail, and indeed the pages are creased in that tell-tale, tri-fold pattern indicating it was shoved in a regular old envelope to make its way to me.
At almost five pages in length, it’s a pretty hefty update, with touring, press coverage and other news around the time of the release of the band’s 1994 album, Mars Audiac Quintet. There’s also a history of McCarthy, Tim Gane’s pre-Stereolab band.
Let’s not forget the merch! Stereolab’s merchandising game has always been strong, as evidenced by the numerous “Xmas Stocking Fillers” listed for sale. Among the goods: a mug, a combination drink coaster/jigsaw puzzle and a “golfing umbrella.” What, no International Colouring Contest coloring book?

Made this duophonic version of the Pleasure Boat music (M12A) from Godzilla. Hopefully one day an actual recording not sourced from the film will turn up.
