Thoughts on Assignment 1

I hope to explore the hidden acoustic world of "objects that absolutely do not produce sound or noise" when forced to vibrate. This work aims to transform everyday still objects into a grand, strange, and even violent soundscape through extremely close-range recording (micro-acoustics), challenging the audience's perception of "silence" and "noise".

The origin of this idea came from an accidental discovery of someone recording the sound of celery being snapped with a tape recorder. This was quite different from what I had imagined. When I heard the sound magnified many times, I felt very shocked and amazed.

At the same time, I also drew theoretical references from Hildegard Westerkamp's related works. I hope my work also evokes the same sense of wonder in viewers that soundwalks like hers do, constantly exploring the wonders of sound.

The last walk in Red Hook was a great analytical conversation about what makes us compelled and discomforted in the public space. Residents of Red Hook took us to a personal itinerary, where we could be immersed in the seafront and historical site of the neighboorhood.

STRAßENMUSIK AND EARDVERTS: PUBLIC LISTENING INTERVENTIONS AS AN ARTISTIC PRACTICE FOR ENCOURAGING AURAL AWARENESS IN AN EVERYDAY CONTEXT

“This article discusses public listening interventions as an artistic research method to encourage and study aural awareness in everyday environments. I will first provide an overview of aestheticized listening practices in the sonic arts. This will be followed by a discussion of my public listening interventions Straßenmusik and EaRdverts, which I will situate within this wider context of artistic practice. From this perspective, I will adopt a sound artist’s perspective on the questions of how to study sound and enable a discourse on sonic experience. I will suggest possible contributions that sound art makes to this process.”

We just discovered a wonderful audio project related to winter. Check http://www.winterspast.org. Here’s how they describe what they call Everywhere Soundwalks.

"We're looking for winter, and we need your help.  The Everywhere Soundwalks are a series of short walking quests to find winter—winter the way it is now, the way it used to be, and the way it might be in the future. For each short walk you'll be asked to find a certain environment or location:  A pond, the woods, a hill or a bench.  These can be experienced all at once, or you can choose which episodes you’d like to listen to. They can stand on their own as well, like an album."
