NTP Activation on Network Time Protocol Servers
Any system with Linux Red Hat as an operating system - Avaya based servers
Coming up on June 30th one second will be added to the atomic clocks, a.k.a. Leap Second. How this affects Linux Red Hat system is, Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers run off an atomic clock. Often Avaya products use an NTP server to keep sync’d timing. All current and some MD’d Avaya products use Linux Red Hat as an operating system.
Red Had has a bug that when the system auto adjust for Leap Second it prints a message that the internal clock has been adjusted.
There is a potential in some occasions when the message is printed, it may cause the kernel to restart, in turn restarting the operating system.
Avaya has released patches for only for some of the products that could be affected. The other product patches are still pending and many still are in a TBD state for a patch release date.
Avaya product that is running Red Hat will have to be checked to see if NTP is being used. If NTP is not being used no action is required.
If NTP is being used, and the server does not contain the patch then one of 2 options are available:
Turn off NTP prior to Leap Second on June 30th 2015 at 23:59:59 – requires a reboot of the system, then turn NTP back on after Leap Second
Install a Leap Second patch provided by Avaya if there is one available.
The issue is spread to multiple Avaya products. The most current status can be found on the following link, Reference Document
