Electric Wizard: We Live (2004)
As I once wrote in the All-Music Guide with tongue planted firmly in Spinal Tap cheek ...
We Live witnessed the birth of Electric Wizard, Mk. II, as vocalist/guitarist Jus Osborn -- tired of years of internal strife -- parted ways with bassist Tim Bagshaw and drummer Mark Greening in order to “upgrade” from a power trio to a two-guitar quartet.
Into the Dorset doom doyens came bassist Rob Al-Issa, drummer Justin Greaves and, most significantly, second guitarist and Osborn’s future missus Liz Buckingham (ex-Sourvein); out went the Wizard’s original, overwhelming sonic force, replaced by a deep-seated sense of harmonic dread.
Said vibe is quickly established by the album’s sphinx-like, ten-minute, two-part opener “Eko Eko Azarak: 1. Invocation; 2. Ritual,” which puts that second six-string to good use with minor key melodic lines to back up the band's characteristic power riffing.
By comparison, the ensuing title track (with its hammer horror-drawn spoken word intro) will surprise none among the band's devotees; and both the sluggish “Flower of Evil, a.k.a. Malfiore” and requisite fast song, “Another Perfect Day?,” obey well established Wizard norms, with only slightly tiresome results.
But then comes an endlessly despairing “The Sun Has Turned to Black,” and a final, devastating monolith in the 15-minute “Saturn's Children” -- an epic excursion packed with desolate sheets of melodic feedback -- which today stands among my top three Electric Wizard tracks of all time, and I quote:
“Crucified by the sun; In the shadow of the iron cross; Saturn's children come. Invoke the supercoven. Many armed we strike; Like wolves in the night; And the cross turns to black ... And the children of the sun ... Know that their time has come. Give up the fight, slip back into the night. Turn off your mind, there's nothing to find. Find out here ... Saturn’s children ... Saturn’s children ... Lucifer’s children ... Lucifer’s children ...”
This double LP also offers a bonus track in “Tutti i Colori del Buio” (“Every Color in the Dark”), directly named after an Italian horror film ... naturally.
Anyway, my review determined that We Live signaled a qualitative decline from Electric Wizard’s titanic peaks, Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone, but these days I rank this LP higher than the preceding Let Us Prey, and well above anything the band has conjured up since.
